The College of Education & Human Development’s annual Scholars Recognition celebrates scholarship recipients from the college’s seven academic departments for their outstanding achievements.

Alonzo and Gwendolyn Crim Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Alonzo A. Crim and Gwendolyn M. Crim dedicated their lives to improving education. In 1973, Dr. Crim became the first Black superintendent in a major Southeast city. They focused on fostering a culture where students felt supported, creating a “Community of Believers” to unite individuals and organizations in helping students succeed. This scholarship, established in their honor, supports a student in the College of Education & Human Development who is actively engaged in the Alonzo A. Crim for Urban Educational Excellence and is committed to advancing educational excellence in urban schools.

Asa G. Hilliard, III Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III was a world-renowned Pan-Africanist educator, historian and psychologist whose work impacted people around the globe. This scholarship is given in recognition of leadership and engagement in urban education settings that has improved − and demonstrates promise to continue improving − the educational context and/or student development and learning in these settings.

Bradford and Patricia Ferrer Scholarship in Education
Mr. Bradford Ferrer and Mrs. Patricia Ferrer are Georgia State University graduates and have been dedicated supporters in various roles for many years. Mr. Ferrer received his bachelor’s in business administration for the J. Mack Robinson College of Business and Mrs. Ferrer received her master’s in elementary education. This scholarship supports an undergraduate student preparing for a career in teaching who has a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

This scholarship recognizes individuals enrolled in the College of Education & Human Development who are in good academic standing and exhibit outstanding leadership, dedication to their field and a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence.

This scholarship recognizes individuals with outstanding accomplishments in the College of Education & Human Development. Undergraduate and graduate students who receive this scholarship are presently enrolled in the college, have completed at least 30 hours of coursework in the CEHD, are in good standing and show a pattern of department/program involvement or scholarship.

Dr. Cynthia Kuhlman and Dr. Wayne Sengstock Scholarship
College of Education & Human Development alumna Dr. Cynthia Kuhlman (M.S. ’74, Ph.D. ’80) and Dr. Wayne Sengstock, former special education professor at Georgia State University, established this scholarship to support a student in the college who previously attended Drew Charter School, Centennial Place Academy or another Atlanta Public School. The recipient is in good academic standing and, through their service in the classroom, helps promote a diversity of viewpoints and lived experiences within the teacher workforce.

Felicia and Rodney Mayfield Scholarship
Dr. Felicia Mayfield is a proud ‘triple Panther,’ having earned three degrees from Georgia State University. Dr. Mayfield has spent her life sharing her time and talents as a teacher, educator, administrator and motivator, and she credits her Georgia State education as part of her success. This award, established by Dr. Mayfield and her husband, Mr. Rodney Mayfield, recognizes a deserving undergraduate student in the College of Education & Human Development.

Established by Mrs. Kay Chester, this scholarship supports a woman pursuing a degree in teacher preparation who has the challenge of raising a family while furthering her education.

Susan Crim-McClendon Teacher Leader Scholarship
Dr. Susan Crim-McClendon was a lifelong educator who served as associate director of the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence in the College of Education & Human Development. Her life was dedicated to the education of children, and through the establishment of this fund, her legacy continues in the work of the Crim Center’s Teacher Leader Fellows. This scholarship recognizes a student currently enrolled in a teaching certification program within the college who is committed to serving in an urban school setting.

JoAnna White Play Therapy Scholarship
Dr. JoAnna F. White, former department chair of the college’s Department of Counseling and Psychological Services, began the play therapy training program during her tenure. This scholarship is presented to a graduate student in good standing in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services who is dedicated to the study and clinical practice of play therapy.

Karen and George McCarty Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Karen McCarty, a two-time graduate of Georgia State University, and is given to graduate students in the clinical mental health counseling master’s program and school counseling master’s program to build their networks, knowledge and skills by attending local, state and national professional conferences related to their area of counseling expertise.

Kenneth and Mary Matheny Professorship in Counseling and Psychology Scholarship
Dr. Kenneth Matheny was a faculty member in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services for 45 years, held the Regents’ Professor rank and taught more than 5,000 students over the course of his career. Dr. Matheny was a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology with the American Board of Professional Psychology and had been awarded Fellow status with the Academy of Counseling Psychology, the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology and the Georgia Psychological Association. This award, established by Dr. Matheny and his wife, Mrs. Mary Matheny, is given to full-time doctoral students in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services.

Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education
David Jemel Holloman Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Darryl Holloman, a three-time Georgia State University alumnus and former dean of students at the university, established this scholarship in memory of his younger brother, David Jemel Holloman. This memorial scholarship is awarded to an exceptional undergraduate student in the CEHD majoring in early childhood and elementary education.

Lorene C. Pilcher Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Lorene Pilcher was a professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education who was appointed the first research professor in the former College of Education by the Board of Regents, a position she maintained until she retired. Dr. Pilcher established this award to support an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in early childhood education who has a desire to become a teacher and demonstrates a passion for enhancing the lives of children.

Dr. Vicki Denmark Endowed Scholarship for Future Educational Leaders
Inspired by her own transformative doctoral experience at Georgia State University, Dr. Vicki Denmark, a lifelong educator and alumna, established this scholarship to support aspiring leaders committed to making a lasting impact in schools and communities. It provides support to graduate students in good academic standing who are pursuing a degree in educational leadership in the College of Education & Human Development.

Research, Measurement and Statistics Scholarship
This scholarship provides support to Ph.D. students in the College of Education & Human Development who are majoring in research, measurement and statistics and are in good academic standing at Georgia State University. Generously supported by Dr. John Neel, former chair of the Department of Educational Policy Studies, and Dr. Susan Neel (Ph.D. ’91), a CEHD alumna, the scholarship reflects their commitment to advancing educational research and supporting the next generation of scholars in the field.

Jeff and Debbie Rupp Endowed Scholarship in Exercise Science
Established by Dr. Jeff Rupp, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health from 1985-2011, and Ms. Debbie Rupp, associate director of recreational programs from 1987-2010, this award is presented to a student in the Department of Kinesiology and Health’s exercise science program. Undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.6 or higher are eligible to be nominated by department faculty. Awardees are selected based on academic promise, leadership and talent. Further, these students have typically been leaders in a variety of extracurricular pursuits and won recognition for their interests at the regional, state or national level.

Presented to active graduate students in sport administration. As the former Marketing Services Director for the Atlanta Braves and faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology and Health, Ms. Mary Helen Huggins dedicated herself to and attained a high level of integrity and personal ethics.

Roslyn Hirsch Balbirer Memorial Scholarship
Ms. Roslyn Hirsch Balbirer was a passionate consumer of the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta and a dedicated advocate of the value and benefits of sport participation for people with a disability. This award is presented to a graduate student enrolled in the Department of Kinesiology and Health who has a commitment to advancing opportunities in physical activity, sport for individuals with a disability, and who demonstrates the potential to advance the field of adapted physical activity or sport administration.

Established by Dr. Carol Springer Sargent to honor her dissertation chair, Dr. Amy R. Lederberg, this award is given to a student to support the development of their research agenda and recognize research-related accomplishments.

Ann Dixon Demonet Early Childhood Special Education Endowed Award
Mrs. Ann Dixon Demonet attended Georgia State University and received a master’s degree in special education. After graduating, she taught special education in Georgia and Michigan, where she was known by all as an exceptional educator. While living in Georgia, she was recognized by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as an outstanding educator in the Atlanta area. This award was established by Mr. Seth Leibler and Ms. Ann Parkman and is given to a student pursuing a graduate degree in special education with a concentration in early childhood special education.

Joanne R. Nurss Endowed Scholarship in Life-Long Literacy
Dr. Joanne R. Nurss spent most of her career at Georgia State University educating teachers and working in programs for young children, adult literacy and English language learners. She was directly responsible for the early establishment and success of the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education. This scholarship supports a graduate level student who has a focus in life-long literacy.

Ms. Vivian Street established this scholarship in memory of her sister, College of Education & Human Development alumnus and celebrated high school chemistry teacher Ms. Adell Street Adams. This scholarship supports an exceptional CEHD student pursuing a degree in science education.

Beverly J. Armento Endowed Doctoral Award
Dr. Beverly J. Armento, research professor of social studies education, served on the College of Education & Human Development faculty from 1975-2003. Realizing the power of the individual teacher, Dr. Armento committed her career to the preparation of exemplary teachers – ones who believe in the power of each child to be successful in their lives. This award supports doctoral students in middle and secondary education.

Mr. Bradford Ferrer and Mrs. Patricia Ferrer have demonstrated their commitment to the university by continuing to be an integral participant at Georgia State. Mrs. Ferrer, a former math and science teacher, understands the importance of students receiving a solid education by a well-prepared teacher. This award supports a student majoring and excelling in middle level education.

Dr. Jerry H. Robbins has devoted his professional life to the preparation of teachers. During his career at Georgia State University, he was a member of the faculty and served as dean. This award honors a student majoring and excelling in mathematics with a focus in teacher preparation.
