Audiology Specialty Certificate

Georgia State University’s Audiology Specialty Certificate is designed to provide professionals in other disciplines an in-depth knowledge about audiologic assessment procedures, as well as a robust understanding about audiologic and communication management resources for the hard of hearing and deaf populations.

Postbaccalaureate/graduate students with a unique interest in the following areas and/or populations can greatly benefit from this certificate: pediatric and school-age hearing-impaired and deaf populations, adults and elderly populations with hearing loss and related communication problems, cochlear implants, auditory processing disorders (i.e., management and intervention techniques), auditory training, aural habilitation/rehabilitation, comprehensive assessment of communication needs and hearing conservation, among others.

This fully online program is designed to be completed in two consecutive semesters, primarily via synchronous meetings.

Program Details

Prospective students will follow Georgia State University admission policies and the same application deadlines as other College of Education & Human Development programs. Prospective students will complete an online application through the Georgia State University system for fall semester admission. Students’ applications will be reviewed by the program’s admissions committee. Program faculty will make final admission decisions.

Specific admission requirements include:

  • Online application
  • Goals statement: No more than two typed pages that summarize career goals related to communication sciences and disorders, specifically in the areas of audiology and interprofessional education and collaborative practice (upload with the application)
  • Resume (upload with the application)

The Audiology Specialty Certificate is a 13 credit hour program of study.

  • Introduction to Hearing Sciences and Disorders (3-credit hours)
  • Aural Rehabilitation (3-credit hours)
  • Advanced Audiological Assessment (3-credit hours)
  • Amplification and Assistive Listening Devices (3-credit hours)
  • Management of Auditory Processing Disorders Seminar (1-credit hour)

The Audiology Specialty Certificate has the following objectives:

  • To create a workforce of professionals that practice interprofessional collaboration to better serve the needs of those patients and students under mutual care, following the main competencies for interprofessional practice:
    • Maintaining a climate of mutual respect while working with individuals of other professions.
    • Using knowledge of one’s own role and that of other professions to assess and address the needs of patients.
    • Communicating in a responsive and responsible manner that supports a team approach.
    • Applying relationship-building values and the principles of team dynamics to perform effectively in various team roles to plan, deliver and evaluate the people they serve with policies that are safe, timely, efficient, effective and equitable.
  • To increase access to highly competent and specialized providers for people with hearing loss who come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and ensure that the provided care is patient centered.
