An audiology assistant is a person who, after appropriate training and demonstration of competency, performs delegated tasks that are prescribed, directed and supervised by a certified or licensed audiologist. Audiology Assistants improve access to patient care by increasing the availability of audiology services. They also reduce costs by performing tasks that do not require the professional skills of a certified or licensed audiologist.

The Audiology Assistant Certificate program offers coursework and supervised clinical experiences to prepare students for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association certification exam and credentialing.

This hybrid format certificate program is ideal for prospective undergraduates or post-bachelor degree students. It also serves as a pathway for students interested in pursuing and applying for a master’s degree in speech-language pathology or clinical doctorate in audiology.

Students should consult with advisers to confirm availability of online courses and requirements or additional costs that may be associated with courses. Students should check with advisers about which campuses offer the courses they need. Typically, core courses required for pathways can be taken at most locations and online, while pathway-specific courses may require attendance at a particular location.

Pathway Details

Prospective students will need to complete an online application. Students’ applications will be reviewed by the Office of Academic Assistance certificate program admissions committee. Program faculty will make final admission decisions.

Specific admission requirements include:

  • Online application
  • Goals statement: No more than two typed pages that summarize career goals related to communication sciences and disorders and working as an audiology assistant (upload with the application)
  • Resume (upload with the application)
  • Two letters of recommendation (identify recommenders on the application)

    CSD 2490/4490: Aural Rehabilitation (3)
  • CSD 2540/4540: Amplification and Assistive Listening Devices for Audiology Assistants (3)
  • CSD 2570/4570: Advanced Audiological Assessment (3)
  • CSD 2600/4600: Professional Practices for Audiology Assistants (1)

Program Total: Minimum of 13 hours

The Audiology Assistant Certificate has the following objectives:

  • To develop the workforce in Georgia and the Southeast by responding to the shortage of audiology professionals trained in the state of Georgia.
  • To increase access to competent and culturally appropriate audiology services for people with hearing loss who come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

An audiology assistant performs delegated tasks that are prescribed, directed and supervised by a licensed audiologist. Audiology assistants help improve access to patient care, increase productivity by reducing wait times and enhance patient satisfaction. They work in different healthcare settings, such as public and private hospitals, audiology clinics and physicians’ offices.

The job outlook for an audiology assistant remains excellent at a national level. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for audiology is expected to grow by 10 percent from 2021 to 2031. This growth is a much faster rate than the average for all occupations.*
