What is the criteria for high need schools?
The term high-need local educational agency as defined in section 201 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1021) means a local educational agency (for example, a school district) that serves an elementary or secondary school located in an area which is characterized by at least one of the following:
- a high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line;
- a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which they were trained to teach; or
- a high teacher turnover rate.
Can I still receive the DSPETL scholarship if I do not teach in Fulton County Schools or Rockdale County Public Schools?
If you do not currently teach in either Fulton County Schools or Rockdale County Public Schools, it does not preclude you from being eligible for the DSPETL scholarship. However, you will have to commit to working at a high need school in either district for five (5) years if you are a recipient of the scholarship.
How long is the program?
The M.A.T. degree program is a year long program that consists of 36 credit hours.
How long is the DSPETL Scholarship commitment?
The commitment is five years; one year for the M.A.T. degree program and four years of induction.
What term do I apply for?
When applying to Georgia State University and the College of Education & Human Development, you will apply for the summer 2020.
When will I start classes?
Summer classes begin on June 8, 2020.
How much is tuition? Do I have to pay tuition?

The DSPETL scholarship pays 100% of tuition for Teaching Fellows. Teaching Fellows are responsible for fees. You will also receive a stipend each semester in the amount of $4,000. The stipend is disbursed monthly in the amount of $1,000.
What tests do I need to take for admission?
Students will need to take the GACE Program Admissions Exam and the Ethics Exam.
When do I need to take the GACE? How do I register?
The GACE Program Admissions Exam should be taken during the application process. Students will need this exam to be admitted to the MAT degree programs.
