Graduate and Endorsement Programs in Dual Language and Immersion Education
In response to the growing number of Georgia schools with Dual Language Immersion programs, the College of Education & Human Development’s Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education offers two programs in Dual Language Immersion Education.
These programs engage students in comprehensive exploration, research and practice in elementary Dual Language Immersion education.
These programs develop highly prepared teachers who understand Dual Language Immersion education and are teacher-leaders in establishing learner-centered classrooms consistent with the standards of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium.
Master of Education in Elementary Education Degree with a concentration in Dual Language Education
This program offers a master’s degree in Elementary Education for educators who wish to pursue advanced preparation in Dual Language Education at the elementary level. It is designed for educators who are currently teaching or working in an early childhood/elementary setting. The program begins each semester and may be completed at an individualized pace. The application deadlines are February 14 for Summer, July 15 for Fall and October 15 for Spring. Applicants must meet minimum college admission criteria. You can learn more about the Elementary Education, M.Ed. program on its page.
Dual Immersion Early Childhood Education Endorsement
Overview
The Dual Immersion Early Childhood Education Endorsement program is open to students currently enrolled in Georgia State’s undergraduate or graduate Foreign Language Education program or current educators who hold a Level 4 or higher induction or professional Foreign Language Education Certificate from the state of Georgia. This endorsement qualifies successful candidates to teach in a Kindergarten through fifth-grade Dual Immersion program. The endorsement consists of four courses, which specifically focus on Dual Language Education, and a field-based practicum in a Dual Immersion classroom:
ECE 4430/7730 Perspectives on Child Development for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students
ECE 4440/7440 Biliteracy: Literacy Development in Multilingual Settings
ECE 4397/7397 Elementary Mathematics in Dual Immersion Settings
ECE 4450/7750 Content-based Curricula, Instruction and Assessment for Dual Immersion Classrooms
ECE 7740 Internship I
The four content courses are taught during the summer or evenings on campus during the fall and spring semesters. The field placement course, ECE 7740, requires students to intern in an elementary Dual Immersion classroom with observation and feedback by a university instructor. Students should use their own classrooms for this course. If a student is not teaching in a Dual Language Immersion elementary classroom at the time of the field placement course, a classroom will be located for the student. Classes are sequenced so that candidates can complete the endorsement in one year. The application deadlines are February 15 for Summer, July 15 for Fall and October 15 for Spring.
Successful completion of the five endorsement courses along with a valid level four (4) or higher renewable professional certificate in a foreign language field and a score of Professional level on the GACE content assessment for Early Childhood Education qualifies the student for the Dual Immersion Early Childhood Education Endorsement.
When applying to the Dual Immersion Early Childhood Education Endorsement, non-degree program, submit the following materials:
