CPS Transfer Credit Policy
Transfer credit at the graduate level will not be evaluated until a student has been accepted into a program in the Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) Department. The CPS department will not pre-evaluate transfer credits. A prospective transfer student must apply like a normal, degree-seeking student to their chosen Georgia State University program by the available deadline(s) for that program—the CPS department does not accept any type of transfer application for graduate programs—prospective transfer students apply the same way and at the same time as other prospective students. If the prospective transfer student is accepted, the CPS department will then consider transfer credits. The CPS department will only consider transfer credits from programs that have the same accreditation as the Georgia State program the student is entering. For example, transfer credits into the Mental Health and School Counseling programs at Georgia State will only be considered from CACREP accredited programs.
- After acceptance into a CPS program, complete the Petition to Transfer Graduate and turn the request in to the department.
- Students must submit a syllabus for each course to the department.
- Transferred credit (graduate level courses) must be from an equivalently accredited institution.
- Students must complete a minimum of 27 semester hours in residence at Georgia State University. Therefore, in a 30 credit hour Ed.S. program the student would only be eligible to transfer in 3 credit hours of the program.
- Graduate courses in which the student’s grade is below “B” cannot be used for transfer credit in Georgia State.
- The transfer credit course must be (have been) restricted to graduate students only.
- An undergraduate course cannot be used as transfer credit for a graduate level course.
- Transfer/transient credit cannot be taken during the term in which the student graduates from Georgia State.
- Skills-based courses (Basic Counseling Skills or Group Counseling Systems) cannot be transferred in, nor can the introductory course for any program of study. Other skills-based courses will only be accepted with the approval of the Department Chair and Program Coordinator.
- If the course was taken after application materials had been filed with the Office of Academic Assistance and Graduate Admissions, an official transcript of the course work must be sent directly to the department verifying the course.
- For the master’s programs, transferred credit must be no older than seven calendar years at the time of graduation. (ex. If you began your Georgia State program in 2013 and hope to graduate in May 2015, transfer credit must be dated no later than 2009.)
- For those persons applying to a Specialist in Education (Ed. S.) degree program, only courses taken after admission into an Ed. S. program may be used to fulfill program requirements. Courses completed at the non-degree or master’s level cannot be used as transfer credit for an Ed. S. program. No coursework may be more than six calendar years old at the time of graduation for the Ed.S program.
- Course work taken on a non-credit or auditing basis will not be eligible for transfer credit.
- All transfer credit is subject to the approval of the department and university—no courses can be guaranteed for transfer credit.
