RSA Scholarship Program
Our program has received two grants from the Rehabilitation Services Administration to support students seeking a degree in clinical rehabilitation counseling.
- One grant supports students committed to working with people with any disability (General RSA Grant).
- The second grant supports students interested in specializing in working with people with mental illness and other disabilities (MI RSA Grant).
The grants include:
- Tuition and fees for in-state students up to 60 credit hours (some waivers of out-of-state tuition are also available)
- A stipend each semester for books, supplies, transportation
- A stipend to register for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor examination and test-preparation fees
The purpose of the RSA Scholars program is to increase the supply of qualified vocational rehabilitation counselors to serve the rehabilitation needs of individuals with mental illness and other disabilities.
Georgia State University works closely with the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA) to recruit, train and employ RSA scholars throughout the state of Georgia and other states. After graduation students can obtain positions at VR agencies in every other state, and at affiliated agencies. There is a very high need for Rehabilitation Counselors at GVRA with expertise in the area of mental illness and other disabilities. GVRA anticipates the need to hire many new counselors over the next three to five years. Surrounding states also report a strong need for rehabilitation counselors.
Eligibility
A candidate for an RSA scholarship must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Express an interest in a career in clinical practice, administration, supervision, teaching or research in the vocational rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, especially persons with severe disabilities
- Agree to participate in an internship at Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA).
- Students receiving RSA scholarships are required to work at a VR agency, or agency with a contract or agreement with VR, for two years for each year of support.
- If you receive grant support for 2 years, you will be required to work in an appropriate agency for 4 years. There is a 2 year grace period so the payback needs to be completed within 6 years.
Georgia State University Requirements:
- Scholarship candidates must be fully admitted to graduate status prior to acceptance to the program
- Indicate in your admissions essay your interest in the RSA scholarship.
- Submit a goal statement
- Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA each semester
Once the candidate is awarded an RSA scholarship, and based on the availability of federal funds, the scholarship will continue to be awarded each successive semester of that academic year provided that the student maintains satisfactory progress in the master’s degree program. If a scholarship recipient drops a course that has been paid with scholarship funds after the tuition refund date, the student will be required to pay for the hours dropped.
