Gigi’s Playhouse is an enrichment center in Atlanta that provides free programs and services for children and adults with Down syndrome.
Communication sciences and disorders master’s student Ally Tankersley was one of several students who completed an internship at Gigi’s Playhouse, where she learned how to work with both children and adults on their speech and language skills.
She’s been interested in pursuing a career as a speech therapist since her freshman year of college, and this internship gave her tangible proof that she’s chosen the right path for her.
“Working with my clients there every week was a true joy,” she said. “It is a very special place, and I was honored to be part of each client’s life.”
Tankersley was recognized for her academic achievements at the College of Education & Human Development’s annual Honors Day Ceremony on April 16.
She is the 2024 recipient of the Outstanding Student Clinician Award, which recognizes a student for excellence and creativity in clinical skills in speech-language pathology.
“I was very humbled and honored to receive this award,” Tankersley said. “I am surrounded by many wonderful clinicians in the program who inspire me every day. I think this award is a reflection of working alongside them.”
