Professor Debra Schober-Peterson and communication sciences and disorders students Josie Adams, Aasha Brooks, Matt McCubbin, Meg Sorrells and Dee Wilson recently volunteered at Camp SPEAK, an overnight camp for individuals ages 5-20 who use alternative/augmentative communication.
Twenty-four campers and their families from across the U.S. traveled to Routledge, Ga., to attend Camp SPEAK from Sept. 1-4. Each camper was paired with a communication sciences and disorders student from one of four partner universities – Georgia State University, the University of Georgia, the University of West Georgia and Valdosta State University – who guided them through four days of adapted activities, all under the supervision of licensed speech-language pathologists.
The camp also provided educational workshops by vendors and professionals to parents while they developed friendships and made connections with other families.
