Distinguished University Professor Daphne Greenberg has been named a 2022 Literacy Champion by Atlanta-based nonprofit Literacy Action, Inc.
Literacy Action, Inc. teaches adult learners important literacy, life and work skills that empower them to reach their highest potential.
This year, Greenberg is one of nine people selected as Literacy Champions, who were celebrated for their commitment to adult literacy at an April 13 luncheon hosted by Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Greenberg is a faculty member in the College of Education & Human Development’s Department of Learning Sciences, director of the Adult Literacy Research Center and previously directed the Center of the Study of Adult Literacy, one of several federally-funded projects she led in her career. She has served on numerous expert panels, such as the Institute of Education Sciences Reading, Writing and Language Peer Review Panel, the National Center for Educational Sciences Focus Group on Adult Education and Training Data Collection and the American Institutes for Research Adult ESL Explicit Literacy Study Technical Working Group. She is a founding member of the Georgia Adult Literacy Advocacy group and the Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta. She has tutored native and non-native English-speaking adults and has helped communities organize and develop adult literacy programs.
“Since the mid-1990s, I have been a strong advocate for adult literacy. I have focused my decades of research on this population and have worked with metro-Atlanta practitioners, learners, policy makers and advocates to promote the needs of adult literacy learners at the international, national, regional and local levels,” Greenberg said. “This recognition means the world to me. It feels amazing to be honored as a champion!”
