Jonathan Wesley, social foundations of education doctoral student, has recently published a review of “Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago’s South Side.”
The book features historical and ethnographic research that demonstrates how school closures in 2013 were the most recent manifestation of a decades-long pattern of disinvestment in Chicago Public Schools.
Wesley’s review, published in Educational Studies, summarizes the book’s content, discusses two of the author’s two major claims and shares his interpretation of the book.
“I believe that readers will value this work within the academy and community because it shines a light on the injustices of school closures in predominately African American communities. Bronzeville is just one example,” Wesley wrote in his review. “I would highly recommend this text to other academicians, community activists, educators and other community members.”
