Elizabeth Stevens has received the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR) 2020 Rebecca L. Sandak Young Investigator Award. It includes a certificate and a monetary award of $500. This award was established in 2008 to honor the memory of Rebecca Sandak who died before her research goals and ideas could be fully realized. The award is intended to recognize a gifted young reading researcher who shows outstanding promise and dedication to the field.
Stevens designs and tests reading interventions to identify instructional practices that improve reading outcomes for students with learning disabilities and learning difficulties. Her dissertation study, a randomized control trial examining a reading comprehension intervention for upper elementary struggling readers, was recently published in Scientific Studies of Reading. She is interested in conducting and reporting findings from reading intervention research and translating that research into practice and teacher change through effective professional development and course instruction.
“I aim to support special educators with acquiring the knowledge and skills to be expert reading teachers,” Stevens said.
