Theraplay (Booth, and Jernberg, 2010) is an attachment-based form of family therapy that focuses on the relationship between the child and caregiver. Participants in this workshop will learn the four essential dimensions found in the child/caregiver relationship: Structure, Engagement, Nurturance, and Challenge. Through hands-on, experiential activities attendees will discover how the very act of engaging in this way helps the parent/caregiver regulate the child’s behavior and communicate love, joy and safety to the child. Current research involving Therapeutic Presence (Porgess, 2014 ), Mindfulness (Siegel, 2010), and Attachment theory will (Main, 1990) be discussed in an integrative approach using the Theraplay model. By learning Theraplay theory and technique, attendees will gain knowledge of how to guide families in rebuilding relationships “from the inside out”. Participants in this workshop learn simple yet, powerful activities paralleling with contemporary research in neuroscience to further enrich their clinical practice.
Open to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni
