Study Abroad in China: Sport and exercise science provides a unique opportunity to students who are interested in learning an international perspective on sport and exercise science. Participants will experience a two-week cultural immersion at Beijing Sport University, our host university in Beijing and the top university on sport and exercise science in China. Participants will explore Chinese culture by taking Chinese language and history classes, Taichi classes and traditional Chinese medicine and massage classes.
Participants will also have plenty of opportunities to interact with Chinese students. In addition, they will visit historical and cultural sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Olympic Plaza, among others. Students will learn the similarities and differences in sport/exercise and its cultural influence between China and the U.S., and also study the impact of the Beijing Olympic Games on sport and exercise in China. The Study Abroad in Brazil program will visit Recife, Brazil located on a beautiful white, sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with students and faculty members from the University of Pernambuco as they learn about a new culture in a city rich with history. Participants will visit the Orinda Historic Center and see where one of the largest Carnival celebrations in South America is held. They will visit the Paco do Frevo to learn about the history of Carnival and learn the Frevo, which is the traditional dance of Carnival. The Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, established by the Spanish/Portuguese Jews, is the oldest Synagogue in the Americas. The Ricaro Brennand Institute is home to magnificent art work, including a bronze cast of Rodan’s The Thinker. In addition to seeing a variety of historical and cultural venues, participants will visit local schools and community centers that promote physical activity and attend a Brazilian soccer match. Throughout the program, students will to speak Portuguese and have the opportunity to practice their skills with host families and during shopping excursions at various sites.
