Advising for Education Specialist (Ed.S.) Students

Most graduate student advising takes place in the departments with the student’s program faculty advisor, an academic committee, or the faculty member most familiar with the student’s program of study.

The Office of Academic Assistance and Graduate Admissions will help you adhere to College and University policy and partner with your department when clearing you for graduation.

In addition to the following information, be sure to review the “For Graduate Students” section of Forms, Policies & Regulations.

Active graduate students in a degree program may apply for a change of major or degree status. The Change of Major or Degree Status form includes instructions and Policy 4110, “Changing Major or Degree Status,” for reference. Non-degree students who wish to enter a degree program may not use this form — they must apply online for that degree program.
Specialist residency requires each Ed.S. student to maintain close and continuous involvement with faculty, professional colleagues, and other graduate students in the field. Each department within the College of Education provides a variety of experiences designed for its Ed.S. students who are fulfilling residency requirements. A residency report must be formulated and when completed reported via an Ed.S. residency form available from the forms page at this Web site.
Early Childhood – must complete an action research project and a capstone experience
Educational Leadership – completion of project for EPEL 8690
Professional Counseling – successful completion of CPS 8660
School Counseling – successful completion of CPS 8661
School Psychology – successful completion of Praxis II assessments for school psychology
Special Education – completion of a scholarly study
Teaching and Learning – completion of a scholarly study
In order to transfer graduate credit from another regionally accredited college or university, students must initiate a petition with their advisor. Guidelines for transfer credit are listed on the form. Students who completed graduate credits at another institution prior to admission to their current program should submit the petition during the first term of enrollment.

A student who chooses to attend another institution as a transient student during their current program, must secure permission from their academic advisor prior to enrolling at another institution. Transient authorization must also be obtained through the Office of Academic Assistance and Graduate Admissions. Failure to receive both approvals may jeopardize the transfer of credits.
