Educational Psychology

I entered Georgia State University upon my retirement from the U. S. Army in 1995. Since then I've completed my Masters and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. This page reflects some of my activities undertaken in that process.

Instructional Technology Course Work

I used studies supporting my cognate in Instructional Technology as a vehicle to explore the use of the Web for educational purposes.

IT 8230 - Introduction to Technology Mediated Instruction. In meeting the course requirements, I participated in a group project. My portion of that project was, "A Consideration of Multimedia Instruction" which the group incorporated into a larger "Multimedia Design" website.

IT 8390
- Analysis of Education, Training, and Performance Support Centers.

IT 8420 - Web-Based Instruction. The attached files formed the basis of my contribution to a group project. Incomplete and not properly formatted, it does provide a number of interesting references and resources.

IT 8430 - Computer Based Education - Principles and Practices.

IT 8200 - Diffusion of Innovations case study.

Reference Guides

EndNote 101 - I've developed a reputation as the "go to guy" for information about EndNotes, a bibliographical software program for grad students and faculty members interested in "working smarter," at least when it comes to adding citations to their documents. This guide is a generalized version of the presentation that covers the basics of using EndNotes and is applicable to both the Wintel (Windows) and Macintosh platforms.

Fallacies - I've come across to many instances of research wherein the author argues for a point, but leaves me with the impression that his conclusion is unwarranted. This not-to-short list of fallacies points out some of the more common types of errors that are often made by inattentive authors.

Palm Pilot - The Palm Pilot and other similar "personal digital devices" can be used in many different ways. The primary use of the Palm Pilot is as a "personal organizer" and replacement for numerous paper or computer based personal information organizers. As I've explored the uses of the Palm Pilot Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) I've documented their uses as: Palm Pilot - Organizing Your Life.

PowerPoint 101 - A short course on the basics of creating a PowerPoint presentation. Available as a PowerPoint presentation (PowerPoint 101.ppt) or a Ms-Word document (Power Point 101.doc).

SPSS For Windows, Versions 7.5 and 8.0; A Survival Guide for EPRS 853 and 854, Edition 3 - I originally wrote "SPSS for Windows, Version 7.0; A Survival Guide...", as a class project extending the earlier "SPSS for Windows, Version 6.1; A Survival Guide...", written by Randy R. Beggs. Since that time, I've revised it twice. This is its latest incarnation. The class project that would never die.... Although a bit dated, the information remains useful. Expect an update to Version 12 or 12.5 for Windows and Version 11 for Macintosh during Spring or early Summer 2005.

Study Tips - A quick and dirty list of study tips for my students. I hope to clean this up later with appropriate detailed notes, explanations, and references.

Research

As a graduate student, I've had the good fortune to have been involved in several different research projects, each addressing different areas in which I have an interest.

2002-2005. Dissertation.

My dissertation work proceeded from my involvement with the GenScope Assessment Project. It focused on discourse in the classroom and its relationship to learning.

2000-2003. GenScope Assessment Project.

Conducted under the direction of Dr. Dan Hickey, this was an assessment and manipulation of student motivation in cooperative learning groups within high school genetics classrooms. This was a mixed-methods, multi-year study utilizing videography, interview, observations, and survey data.

1999-2000. Learning By Design.

Conducted under the direction of Dr. Dan Hickey, this was an assessment and manipulation of student motivation in collaborative science learning settings. This was a multi-year study using videography support and innovative learning experiences.

1998-1999. Internet Based Inquiry and Learning.

Conducted under the direction of Dr. Dan Hickey, this was a mixed- methods study focused on an innovative web-based learning environment featuring a portable-laptop computer classroom. The system and curriculum was tested in Atlanta area schools, and at Wheeling Jesuit University's NASA supported Center for Educational Technologies in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Associated with this effort was the fielding of a Portable Wireless LAN focused around 13 notebook computers with wireless connection (Lucent WaveLAN) to the Internet. At the time, this was a cutting-edge application of technology available for use in the classroom.

1996-1997. Enhancing Reading Comprehension in Older Adults.

Conducted under the direction of Dr. Dennis N. Thompson, this was an intervention intended to foster improvement in reading comprehension in older adults (aged 63-91 years).
