Georgia State University
(Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education),
Suez Canal University (Faculty of Education) and Assiut
University (Faculty of
Education) are collaborating to professionalize the education of children
and adults with special needs in Egypt. This project proposes to investigate the cultural,
historical and educational foundations of services to children and adults with
disabilities in order to institutionalize long-term professional and family
oriented service programs. Faculty members from each university will join in
collaborative efforts to enhance the knowledge and training programs for
current and future teachers both across and within their respective
universities.
The project was initiated with faculty
from Suez
Canal
University in Ismailia. The first faculty exchange was held between
February 11 and March 2, 2001.During that time the team members spend a great
deal of time in schools working with teachers
and students. Since that time, faculty from
Suez Canal University have visited Georgia State
University and schools in the Atlanta, Georgia area in 2001 and 2002. The
Georgia State
University team visited Suez Canal University and Assiut University in 2003.
On October 8, 2003 the Project launched the Arabic translation of the
textbook, Special Education for All Teachers.
The translated book was presented at a workshop of the
14 Egyptian national universities and other Egyptian special educators and
parents of children with special needs. News
article about the book in the Georgia State University College of Education
UpDate (.pdf format).
In December, 2005 the Project sponsored a
two-day workshop at Assiut University. The project's final work was the release
of the translation into Arabic of Donn Brolin's book Life-Centered Career
Education, made available to the project by
the Council for Exceptional Children.
