*ASTRONAUTS IN SPACE

Pretend to be astronauts on a mission to another planet! Using technology and language arts, students will become experts about another planet in the solar system, create a cyber badge and postcard, and communicate impressions and data by sending messages via e-mail. Students will work cooperatively to list the planets in order, observe and compare different planets and compose a text from research facts. Instructor: Precious Goodson (Dekalb County Schools)

HAVE FUN WITH CHEMISTRY

In this class you will, light a water balloon on fire, create life sized models of atoms with a Phantom. Use marshmallows and gumdrops to make mighty molecules! Use marbles, nails, and wooden blocks to understand atomic structure. Be a detective and identify four unknown mystery powders. Eat Lemonhead candy to study about solutions. Have a “slimey” good time with slime. Instructor: Melanie Meder (Retired High School Teacher, B.S. Chemistry, Masters in Education)

ENGINEERING LAB I

Ever Thought you could build a better Empire State Building? Learn how buildings are made and construct your own. Students will also learn about bridges and road construction as well as robotics, electricity, and telecommunication devices. And let's not forget planes, rockets, cars, boats, and trains! Note: $15 Material fee. Instruction: Alethea Pounds (Free Lance Instructor)

INTRODUCTION TO BIOLOGY

Do you ever wonder what makes milk spoil or bread turn black and furry? Or why food dissolves in your mouth but not in your hands? In this course we will develop scientific skills while performing hands-on experiments to learn about different organisms in the environment, such as bacteria and fungi. We will also explore other general biological concepts such as how plants breathe, how saliva breaks down food and much, much more! Instructor: Agnieszka Truax (GSU Dept. of Biology)

MATH MAGICIANS

Calling all math lovers! Come and join the fun. In this course we will apply our math skills to games, logic puzzles, and story problems related to real life experiences. Students will explore the importance of mathematical thinking, approach problem solving in different ways. We will have fun and find out how math can be pleasurable and exciting. Instructor: Nilay Manzagol (GSU Mathematics Department)

ORIGAMI AND GEOMETRY

Origami is the ancient art of paper folding. Geometry is the math that studies shapes. Geometry and origami combined make learning fun. Students will learn to make a variety of paper animals, insects and beautiful everyday items while applying geometry terms. Amaze your friends, family and teachers while you fold paper into geometric shapes and origami models. Instructor: Pat Gilman (Free-Lance Instructor)

THE SCIENTIST'S LAB

Enjoy experimenting with gravity, rocketry, motion, pressure and electricity,  while having fun learning the basics of scientific investigation—how boats float, volcanoes erupt, glaciers melt; make parachutes, helicopters and motors; make electricity from fruit and musical instruments from paper; grow crystals, and icicles; create conditions to produce tsunamis, acid rain and hurricanes; investigate  how animals hide for survival in their habitats; construct time telling tools from the sun and moon. Note: $10 Material Fee. Instructor: Evelyn Pound (Free-Lance Instructor)
