BLOGGING AND PODCASTING

Communication in today’s age goes far beyond the postal service. Blogging is a communication tool which collects a person’s thoughts and comments on various subjects. In this class students will learn the rules and etiquette of blogging in addition to creating their own class blog! Podcasting has also become a popular communication tool. Podcasts are audio files which are listened to using the internet. On top of their class blog, students will create a podcast and learn how to link it to their class blog. Instructor: Nneka Robinson (Woodward Academy)

CLAYMATION

Claymation, short for Clay Animation, is a popular 20th century form of stop- motion animation used to create characters such as Gumby and Wallace and Gromit.  In small collaborative groups, students will command scriptwriting, storyboarding, set design and construction, clay character creation, filming, and final editing.  Students will take home their very own DVD copy of the movie that they created! Note: $10 Material Fee. Instructor: Bhavinani (Fulton County Schools)

DESIGNING A ZOO EXHIBIT

Making wild animals comfortable in a zoo is not easy! Lean what goes behind the design of zoo exhibits and how to meet not only the animals’ needs but the public’s expectations. Become an architect, zookeeper, artist, horticulturist, and more to design an exhibit for an animal of your choice! Instructor: Zoo Atlanta Staff

ENGINEERING LAB I

Ever Thought you could build a better Empire State Building? Learn how buildings are made and construct your own. Students will also learn about bridges and road construction as well as robotics, electricity, and telecommunication devices. And let's not forget planes, rockets, cars, boats, and trains! Note: $15 Material fee. Instruction: Alethea Pounds (Free Lance Instructor)

HAVE FUN WITH CHEMISTRY

In this class you will, light a water balloon on fire, create life sized models of atoms with a Phantom. Use marshmallows and gumdrops to make mighty molecules! Use marbles, nails, and wooden blocks to understand atomic structure. Be a detective and identify four unknown mystery powders. Eat Lemonhead candy to study about solutions. Have a “slimey” good time with slime. Instructor: Melanie Meder (Free-Lance Instructor)

INTRODUCTION TO BIOLOGY

Do you ever wonder what makes milk spoil or bread turn black and furry? Or why food dissolves in your mouth but not in your hands? In this course we will develop scientific skills while performing hands-on experiments to learn about different organisms in the environment, such as bacteria and fungi. We will also explore other general biological concepts such as how plants breathe, how saliva breaks down food and much, much more! Instructor: Agnieszka Truax (GSU Dept. of Biology)

MINI-MEDICAL SCHOOL I

Have a blast in this class while learning about the major systems of the human body. Hands-on activities such as model-making and high-school-level dissections are featured. You will love the “grossology” and be amazed at how much you learn.  Note: A $10 material fee (given to the instructor on the first day) is required. Instructor: Sara Grant (Free-Lance Instructor)

SAY WHAT ?!?

Isn’t “I’m bored” redundant by now? Are your eyes still glued to Jerry Springer? Have your parents been bugging you about your constant ‘texting’? Is your Ipod your new best friend? Well let’s be proactive in a computer-dominated world with a class all about communicating! Students will develop the life-long skills in the art of public speaking they deserve! And parents, you won’t have to make an appointment to use your house phone ever again! Instructor: Sharyn Riggs (Dekalb County Schools)

THE SCIENTIST'S LAB

Enjoy experimenting with gravity, rocketry, motion, pressure and electricity,  while having fun learning the basics of scientific investigation—how boats float, volcanoes erupt, glaciers melt; make parachutes, helicopters and motors; make electricity from fruit and musical instruments from paper; grow crystals, and icicles; create conditions to produce tsunamis, acid rain and hurricanes; investigate  how animals hide for survival in their habitats; construct time telling tools from the sun and moon. Note: $10 Material Fee. Instructor: Evelyn Pound (Free-Lance Instructor)
