In Cooking with Academics we will introduce and use skills from subjects such as Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies and Science to create healthy snacks, delicious deserts and scrumptious meals. We will also work on building or social skills by working in teams and helping each other. Rials (Educator, Gwinnett County Schools)
Come one; come all to Crystal Pond Woods! We will meet 5 animal characters who live in this fairy-tale village. Although these animals are good friends, they are each “thinkers” in a special way and teach the children how to “think” like they do. Dudley the Detective is a deductive/convergent thinker. Isabel the Inventor is a divergent thinker who likes to brainstorm lots of answers to a problem. Sybil the Scientist loves to classify and organize the information she collects. Max the Magician attempts to fool our brains through what our eyes perceive. Jordan the Judge encourages students to base decisions on factual criteria which is a kind of evaluative thinking. Targeted skills include analysis, synthesis, and evaluation especially for this aged-child. Instructor: Teresa Pawlik, (EdD)
Come along for the ride as we explore the languages, games, arts, food and culture from countries around the world. Guest speakers will visit as we cook traditional foods, play games from around the globe, learn conversational phrases and become connoisseurs of worldwide culture. Oh yeah…DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT! Instructor: Christy Wallace (Instructor at Sophia Academy)
Who says you shouldn’t play with your food? In this course, we will get our hands messy and use our scientific minds to perform various hands- on experiments using certain foods and the things that foods are made of. Come discover fun facts about foods, perform taste tests, make predictions while performing experiments, dissect food, understand cause and effect, explore chemical reactions and make edible things that you can take home as the intriguing world of foodstuffs unfolds and whets your appetite for learning and discovery. Note: A $5 material fee (check payable to GSU) given to the instructor on the first day is required. Keisha Lambert (Early Childhood Educator, Freelance Instructor)
