In Cooking with Academics we will introduce and use skills from subjects such as Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies and Science to create healthy snacks, delicious deserts and scrumptious meals. DON’T JUST PLAY VIDEO GAMES, MAKE THEM!*
Have you ever played Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, or Oven Break? Now you can use MIT’s free software - Scratch to create beginner video games. Come learn the basics of creative computing. Students will learn the basics of computer programming by planning, exploring, creating, and reflecting. They will explore creative computing through creative arts, virtual stories, and mini video-game projects. The Latin word for game is Ludus, which also means school, fun and sport. Ludi Math is for students to have fun, learn more and show what they know about Math. Come and join the fun! In this course we will apply our math skills to games, logic puzzles, and story problems related to real life experiences. Throughout the course, students will work individually and in groups, with an emphasis placed on the importance of mathematical thinking, approaching solving problems in different ways. ROCKS, MINERALS, AND CRYSTALS: EARTH’S TREASURES
Whether you like rocks or just appreciate the beauty of a colorful gemstone, this class has something for you. You’ll learn to analyze and appreciate rocks and minerals by their characteristics, grow crystals, and research related topics that really interest you. Finally you will determine what makes things like gems valuable to humans. Note: A $10 material fee (check payable to GSU) given to the instructor on the first day is required. Let’s dissect a real shark. Biology will come alive as we find out about shark legends, the anatomy of sharks, their habits, and their importance to man, while we get into “frenzy” about sharks. Instructor: Gail Boynton (Retired Gifted Program Educator, Gwinnett County Schools)
Explore the wonders of space including constellations and the mythology behind them, rocketry, satellites and planetary exploration and the history, present and future of manned space flight. You will participate in hands-on activities and experiments, take home additional resources (so you can repeat the activities) and have a blast! Instructor: Chris Thompson (Freelance Instructor)
Students will experiment with gravity, rocketry, motion, pressure and electricity in their own laboratory while they have fun learning the basics of scientific investigation. They will learn how boats float, volcanoes erupt, glaciers melt; build Benham’s disks, galvanometers, ellipses, parachutes, helicopters and motors; make electricity from fruit and musical instruments from paper; grow crystals, and icicles; create conditions to produce tsunamis, acid rain and hurricanes; investigate how animals hide for survival in their habitats; construct time telling tools from the sun and moon; grow and test plant life in various stages of development. Have you ever wanted to know why and how it rains, how hurricanes and tornadoes form, or just want to become a meteorologist and predict the weather? Weather Wonders is a hands-on class that allows you to create a cloud in a bottle, learn and create the tools used to measure various types of weather, become a meteorologist, take a look inside a hurricane and even form your own tornado! Join me as we go on exciting journey through the mysteries of our weather! Note: A $5 material fee (check payable to GSU) given to the instructor on the first day is required. . Youth Business Club is a program that teaches children about business. They will learn about the real world of business: How to brainstorm for business ideas, marketing, business plans, ethics, budgeting and much more. Each child will leave with a great business idea, business cards, one page business plan and a business name. They will be ready to start their business with the option to participate in a business marketplace to sell their products and services.
