Are you interested in acting, making movies, music videos, animation and other types of media projects? Then this is the class for you. Learn the basics of producing media programs as well as acting techniques for on camera presentations. This is an important combination for good moviemaking. From ideas to scripts to recording you will be introduced to the production process. I will bring in an APPLE laptop to show you how the edit process works. Your projects will be edited by my students with your direction. There will be a “Media Showcase” of your work on the last day. If someone has taken this class before and they signed up again there will be opportunities to build on media skills by leading other groups and working on independent projects. Claymation, short for Clay Animation, is a popular 20th century form of stop- motion animation used to create characters such as Gumby and Wallace and Gromit. In small collaborative groups, students will command scriptwriting, storyboarding, set design and construction, clay character creation, filming, and final editing. Students will take home their very own DVD copy of the movie that they created! Note: A $10 material fee given to the instructor on the first day is required. Get the best out of your family computer by creating your own computer language! Learn the “break the problem into bites you can conquer” problem solving strategy. Dazzle with graphics directly related to geometry and math. Create simple games to gain comprehension of the work behind all computer applications. There is no end to what you can make Logo do. Have you ever played Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, or Oven Break? Now you can use MIT’s free software - Scratch to create beginner video games. Come learn the basics of creative computing. Students will learn the basics of computer programming by planning, exploring, creating, and reflecting. They will explore creative computing through creative arts, virtual stories, and mini video-game projects. Get ready to have fun, be grossed out, AND learn a lot as you unravel the grand and gross secrets of the human body. This time the emphasis will be on the digestive system, urinary system, nervous system, and the senses. There will be lots of hands-on activities as well as exciting dissections. Let’s dissect a real shark. Biology will come alive as we find out about shark legends, the anatomy of sharks, their habits, and their importance to man, while we get into “frenzy” about sharks. Instructor: Gail Boynton (Retired Gifted Program Educator, Gwinnett County Schools)
This class will address different ways to communicate to others for a productive life and happy lifestyle. It will address self-esteem and how to improve the way we see ourselves in every day real life situations. We will accomplish this through art, verbal discussions and role playing. Also we will include building blocks such as assertive training for choosing friends and healthy relationships that are rewarding and positive for our children. Have you ever wanted to say something but found yourself stumbling over words or just plain afraid? Well, you’re not alone. Many are afraid of public speaking, but you don’t have to be. There are ways to say what you want clearly, confidently and effectively. There are also ways to ask for what you want and, if your confidence is high and your leadership abilities and tactics are great, you just may get it through the speaking art of persuasion—another form of public speaking that will be covered in SPEAK FOR YOURSELF. Students will experiment with gravity, rocketry, motion, pressure and electricity in their own laboratory while they have fun learning the basics of scientific investigation. They will learn how boats float, volcanoes erupt, glaciers melt; build Benham’s disks, galvanometers, ellipses, parachutes, helicopters and motors; make electricity from fruit and musical instruments from paper; grow crystals, and icicles; create conditions to produce tsunamis, acid rain and hurricanes; investigate how animals hide for survival in their habitats; construct time telling tools from the sun and moon; grow and test plant life in various stages of development. Youth Business Club is a program that teaches children about business. They will learn about the real world of business: How to brainstorm for business ideas, marketing, business plans, ethics, budgeting and much more. Each child will leave with a great business idea, business cards, one page business plan and a business name. They will be ready to start their business with the option to participate in a business marketplace to sell their products and services.
