THEME: All about STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics |
|
The theme of this year’s Saturday School for Scholars and Leaders Day Camp, May 28-June 1 is “All about STEM”. This stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and we have planned a fun-filled, hands on and totally engaging curriculum for your children around these 4 areas.
Students in grades K-1 will explore different occupations that use STEM areas in the course of their jobs. They will learn how some very different occupations use science, technology, engineering and mathematics differently. Students will explore the careers of biologists, police officers, architects, meteorology and more!
Examples of the learning activities include:
Biologists will observe animals and recreate their habitats to learn how to protect the environment
Police officers will look for clues to solve science related mysteries using forensics
Architects will use money to purchase building supplies and construct the sturdiest bridges
Meteorologists will recreate different types of weather using hands on building materials. Test how tall building will measure up against the elements!
Students in grades 2-3 will use STEM to solve mysteries as junior detectives. They will dust for fingerprints, look for hidden clues, recreate the crime scene and figure out “whodunit” using science, technology, engineering and mathematics!
Examples of the learning activities include:
Using digital cameras to photograph crime scenes
Using surveillance videos and deductive reasoning to solve different daily mysteries
Going on scavenger hunts to search for clues
Reconstructing crimes scenes to work backwards in solving crimes
Students in grades 4-8 will be “Wild Water Explorers”. Student activities are designed to provide hands-on, inquiry-based science, math, and technology activities that help develop critical thinking skills and student understanding of the importance of our most important natural resource – the Chattahoochee River.
Examples of the learning activities include:
Using a hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) to navigate.
Using Google Earth to view the Chattahoochee Watershed.
Exploring topographic maps and how to read them.
Using microscopes to explore live algae and microorganisms that inhabit the Chattahoochee River.
Constructing models of ecosystems that may be found within the Chattahoochee Watershed Basin.
Exploring the diversity of plants and animals within the Chattahoochee Watershed
Discovering how human activities impact the river ecosystem.
All these learning objectives are presented through engaging, hands-on activities that are appropriate for each grade level, but also present unique challenges for students to promote higher order thinking. We believe your children will be enriched by this experience and will come home sharing their wonderful discoveries with you!
