The Five Goals of the P-16 Initiative

• To improve student achievement to high levels by focusing on interlocking, cross-sector changes in our educational systems
• To help students move smoothly from one educational sector to another, when movement is appropriate
• To ensure that all students who enter post-secondary education are prepared to succeed
• To improve post-secondary admission and success rates of minority students and students from low income groups
• To more fundamentally link teacher education, the public schools, and local communities in educational reform

Raising the Bar: Enhanced University Admission Standards

Success in college depends on strong pre-college preparation in academic subjects, and on high student aspirations. University System of Georgia officials are phasing in higher admissions standards for the state's 34 public colleges and universities to break a cycle of low admissions expectations. Like fielding a good high jump team, educators must coach students effectively while the admissions bar is gradually raised. This helps students improve their academic preparation, meet new challenges and succeed in college.
