Alternative Pathways to Teaching

Middle/Secondary Program: TEEMS/M.A.T. Programs

This program provides initial teacher preparation for individuals holding bachelor's degrees in English, mathematics, science, or history. Individuals who complete the program will be certified to teach grades 7-12 as well as obtained a M.A.T. degree in his or her content area:

Early Childhood Education: Urban Alternative Preparation Program

This program was developed to address the issue of dwindling numbers of competent, qualified teachers for the urban classroom.

Special Education: The Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education offers the following certifications:

  • Autism
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • Early Childhood Special Ed
  • Interrelated Special Ed (EBD, LD, & MID)
  • Mental Retardation
  • Orthopedic Impairments

Teacher Residency Program (special education, math, or science)Net-Q 
While enrolled in an 18 month initial certification program at Georgia State, teacher residents are placed with a mentor teacher in a high-needs school and receive a $25,000 living stipend.  The residencies are in special education (elementary/middle/or high school), mathematics or science (middle or high school) Successful completion ensures a job with the school district where the Teacher Residency Program is completed.
