Advising for Master’s (MAT, MEd, MLM, MS) Students

General Information

The principal advising for graduate students takes place in the departments and is usually carried out by the program coordinator, an academic committee, or the faculty member most familiar with the student's program of study. The Office of Academic Assistance will guide masters candidates through their final clearance for graduation and Ph.D. candidates through the last phases of submitting evidence of their terminal degree.

The following information is provided as general information. Students should refer to the Graduate Catalog for complete information. If there is a question not considered here, please contact the Office of Academic Assistance. Fpr pertinent forms, please visit the Graduate Forms page.

Change of Major
Master’s degree students must apply to the new major. This requires submission of a separate graduate application, application fee, and supporting documents.

Comprehensive Exam
All master’s degree students must meet a comprehensive exam requirement as determined by the departmental program faculty. Students should contact their department for information about the comprehensive exam requirement for their major.

Petition to Transfer Graduate Credit
In order to transfer graduate credit from another regionally accredited college or university, students must initiate a transfer petition with their advisor. Guidelines for transfer credit are listed on the form.

Students who completed graduate credits at another institution prior to admission to their current program should submit the petition during the first term of enrollment.

A student who chooses to attend another institution as a transient student during their current program, must secure permission from their academic advisor prior to enrolling at another institution. Transient authorization must also be obtained through the Office of Academic Assistance and Graduate Admissions. Failure to receive both approvals may jeopardize the transfer of credits. The form for this request is available on the Graduate Forms page in this Web site.

COE Scholarship
Two scholarships are awarded each fall and each spring to one undergraduate and one graduate student in the College of Education. Currently the award amount is $500 for undergraduate and $500 for graduate winners. Applications for this scholarship may be found on this Web site.

HOPE Teacher Scholarship
The HOPE Teacher Scholarship is available to doctoral students enrolled in programs leading to an advance degree in critical certification fields. Each year, usually in late spring, the Georgia Student Finance Commission issues an application listing the certification fields eligible for the HOPE Teacher Scholarship.
