College of Education Scholarships and Fellowships

Doctoral Dissertation Support Grant:  Applications are currently being accepted for the annual COE Doctoral Dissertation Support Grant (Deadlines: First Monday in October and First Monday in March).  All COE doctoral students who have an approved prospectus may apply for this grant. The COE will award a maximum of 10 grants for $1,000 each (up to 5 per semester), depending on the quality of proposals and availability of funds.  Awards may be used for research expenses including purchase of manuscripts through interlibrary loan, software, data collection expenses, professional travel, and any other expenses that are allowed by Board of Regents accounting rules and as approved by the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research.  All funds awarded must be spent within 12 months of receipt of the award.  In order to qualify for this award, all supporting documentation must be submitted by email to Dr. Susan Ogletree at sogletree1@gsu.edu by 5:00 p.m. on the first Monday in October for the Fall award cycle, and the first Monday in March for the Spring and Summer cycle. All information should be submitted as one PDF document in the order indicated below. The Committee on Research and Scholarship will review all applications and recipients will be chosen and notified within one month after the deadline. Nomination Requirements and Submission Materials:  (a) Cover letter (include degree program and contact information); (b) Two-page summary of the approved prospectus; (c) Nomination letter from doctoral chair addressing all of the selection criteria; (d) Support letter from at least one member of dissertation committee addressing all selection criteria; and (e) Description of how the funds will be used.  The COE Committee on Research and Scholarship will evaluate applications in each of the following areas: (a) Significance or potential impact of the proposed study; (b) Feasibility of the proposed work; (c) Methodological soundness; and (d) Quality of the students’ writing.  At the completion of the award cycle, students should send a summary description of how they used the funds to support their dissertation work to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at wrthompson@gsu.edu 

Birth Through Five (B-5) Scholarship: Georgia State University has partnered with Atlanta Technical College, Georgia Piedmont Technical College and Gwinnett Technical College to select up to 15 technical college early childhood education graduates for “B-5 STAR” scholarships. These scholarships will provide funds to complete a bachelor’s degree in Birth Through Five at GSU. Candidates will be selected to begin the program in the fall semester, 2013. COE Dean's Research Doctoral Fellowship: The Georgia State University College of Education (COE) Dean’s Doctoral Research Fellowships recognize outstanding scholarly accomplishments and the academic potential of newly admitted research doctoral students. Recipients of these four-year fellowships embody the highest standards of scholarship in our graduate programs. As funding permits, the Office of the Dean will determine the number of Fellows and the amount to be awarded which includes tuition remission for 4 academic years. Click here for more information.

College of Education Scholarship: Three scholarships are awarded annually each fall (deadline Oct. 15) to one undergraduate ($650), one master's/education specialist ($1,000) and one Ph.D. ($1,000) student in the College of Education. Awards will be made in the Fall only (the current application form notes a Spring deadline -- this is no longer accurate).Application materials must be submitted to the Office of Academic Assistance and Graduate Admissions, 300 College of Education Building, 404/413-8000. Impacting Metro Atlanta Science Teaching (I-MAST)Scholarship Program: I-MAST Robert Noyce Scholarships will be awarded to students interested in pursuing secondary science teacher certification program at Georgia State. I-MAST offers two entry points for becoming a Noyce Scholar with the purpose of attracting both undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) majors and STEM graduates into secondary (grades 6-12) science teaching careers.  Click here for more information or send email to tgul1@student.gsu.edu

New Teach Grant: The TEACH Grant Program provides up to $4000 per year ($16,000 total for an undergraduate program; $8000 total for graduate studies) in grants to full time students who plan to teach full time in high-need subject areas at schools serving students from low income families.

Paul Douglas Congressional Teacher Scholarship: This scholarship is administered by the Georgia Student Finance Authority for the purpose of encouraging teaching careers at the preschool, elementary, or secondary school level. Priority consideration is given to students in the critical teaching fields. Georgia residents who graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class and are planning to teach upon graduation should contact the Georgia Student Finance Authority at 404/493-5453.

The Margaret Jones Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student who is either preparing to teach or is currently teaching health and physical education at the elementary or middle school level. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 is required. Application forms may be obtained from the Department of Kinesiology and Health (404/413-8050) at the beginning of spring term.
