Student NewsCPS doctoral student, Stephanie Eberts, was selected as an ACES emerging leader. The emerging leaders program is for up-and-coming leaders in the counseling profession. The program includes a day- long training on leadership. Emma O’Gorman, who received her Ed.S. in early childhood education at Georgia State, was voted Teacher of the Year at Annistown Elementary in Gwinnett County, where she teaches first grade. Rebecca Brooke Bays, EPY doctoral student and advisee of Dr. Karen Zabrucky had a paper entitled "Why Does Life Seem to Speed Up as We Age? A Look at Autobiographical Memory in Adulthood” accepted for presentation at the World Conference on Educational Sciences. Counseling and Psychological Services doctoral candidate June Hyun received a $500 research grant from the American College Counseling Association (ACCA). Dr. Tonia Durden has accepted an assistant professor position at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Tonia is also the recipient of the 2009 Lorene Pilcher Outstanding Dissertation in Early Childhood Award. Dell McMullen, who completed her specialist in education degree at Georgia State University, received the National Excellence in Education Award in March from AdvancED, an international accreditation program. Three graduate students in the Communications Disorders Program - Andrea Davis, Torrie Souther, and Cheryl Suppes - created a video and submitted it to the national professional organization, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, as part of a contest to promote "May is Better Hearing and Speech Month.” The youtube video the students sent to ASHA won honorable mention and will be featured on the association’s website. The Learning Technologies student organization, Graduates in Instructional Technology Student Association (GRITS), won the 2009 GSU Royal Flame Award, for Intercultural Relations Program of the Year, for a Collaboration with Zoo Atlanta. Ph.D. students David Stone and Roxanne Russell organized the collaboration and accepted the award on behalf of the group. Emily Decker, who graduated from the TEEMS English program and received her M.A.T. in English, is one of this year’s recipients of the Georgia Power New Teacher Assistance Grant. The grant has been awarded since 2004 to new teachers in Georgia who demonstrate superior abilities. It is awarded in the amount of $1,000 and is to be used on classroom supplies beyond what is provided by the school. Candidates are nominated from the deans of each public college and university in Georgia that has a school of education. Ms. Decker teaches English and Language Arts at Meadowcreek High School in Norcross. Stephanie Eberts, a doctoral students in the Counselor Education and Practice Doctoral Program, was selected for the emerging leaders fellowship for the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. She will participate in a leadership workshop at the ACES conference in San Diego and will receive free registration for the conference.
