Dr. Mike Metzler is Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Education. He also holds the rank of professor in the Kinesiology and Health Department.
Dr. Metzler’s primary responsibilities are to coordinate curriculum, assessment, and accreditation for the Professional Education Faculty programs in the College of Education and the College of Arts & Sciences. He also serves as the Director of the Instructional Technology Center in COE.
“I consider it a great honor to work with Dean Colarusso and our faculty,” says Metzler. “I know this is a very challenging time for educator preparation, but I enjoy working with the dean, his staff, and the Professional Education Faculty to meet those challenges for the benefit of the teachers, counselors, and school leaders we prepare to serve the students in Georgia schools.”
Metzler serves as the Dean’s Representative on several key college committees, and represents the College of Education on several GSU and state-wide committees. He serves as the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative on an appointment from Georgia State president, Carl Patton.
He began his career in higher education at Iowa State University and then spent 13 years at Virginia Tech before coming to Georgia State as an associate professor in 1994. Metzler has been the program coordinator for Health and Physical Education teacher education in the Department of Kinesiology and Health. He was promoted to professor in 1996 and was the Chair of the KH Department in 2004 and 2005.
In 1979, Metzler received his doctoral degree from The Ohio State University, majoring in physical education teacher education with a minor in applied behavior analysis. His teaching and scholarship has been in the areas of teacher education, research on teaching, instructional models, and program assessment.
He received the College of Education "Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award" in 1999. In 2005 he was selected as the Honor Award recipient for career contributions from the Curriculum and Instruction Academy of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
Additionally, Metzler has been a program evaluation consultant to teacher education programs in the United States and presently serves as a consultant to the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technical University in Singapore, and Nara University in Japan.
