Brenda Zellner , who earned her specialist in education degree from Georgia State, was honored as the 2005 Georgia School Counselors Association’s Elementary Counselor of the Year. According to the Green Bay Gazette, Zellner, a De Pere, Wis. native, is a counselor at Freeman’s Mill Elementary School in Lawrenceville, Ga. Prior to her state title, she was recognized as the top elementary school counselor by the Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Nathaniel Miller , who holds a doctorate in educational administration and leadership from Georgia State, is the new superintendent of Marion School District 2 in Florence, S.C. Miller was chosen by the district in November 2005.

Debbie Daub, a COE alumnus who has a specialist degree in special education administration, was the focus of an article in the Henry Herald (http://www.henryherald.com/). Daub, who is Henry County’s special education director, was lauded for her contribution toward making the county’s school system “one with the highest performance in the areas of increasing the rate of graduation and decreasing the rate of dropouts among students with disabilities among state [ Georgia] schools.”

Herman Michael Schuber Jr., is among the three finalists in contention for the school superintendent’s position in Jones County, Ga. The final selection will be on June 14. Schuber is a facilities consultant for the Georgia Department of Education and former superintendent of Dublin City Schools. He received his master’s degree in physics and education and a doctorate in educational leadership from Georgia State.

 Sheila Lacy , a 1984 Georgia State alumnus and teacher at High Point Elementary School in Fulton County, has been nominated for ‘Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers’ by a former student. The student also has to be distinguished by being recognized in ‘Who’s Who Among American High School Students’ or ‘The National Dean’s List.’

Mary Sue Murray (Ph.D. ’88) was appointed to the Georgia State Board of Education. She also served on the NASBE Committee “Window of Opportunity: State Strategies to Close Achievement Levels for All Students.”

Anne Jones (Ph.D. ’88) recently published the book Gold Thunder about NASCAR champion Rex White (McFarland Publishers).

Frances Karanovich, who holds a Ph.D. from Georgia State, was selected 2005 Illinois Superintendent of the Year. She works for the Macomb Community Unit School District 185, according to a report in News Tribune (La Salle, IL) on Dec. 20, 2004.

Sylvia Morgan (M.Ed. ’79) retired in July 2004 after more than 31 years of service with the Georgia School for the Deaf.

B. Sheree Bryant (B.S. ’77) was promoted to associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction in the Butts County School System last year.

Martha M. Wood (Ph.D. ’89) is the founder and director of the Southeastern Center for the Enhancement of Learning (www.scel.org).

Kay Shirley, who received a Ph.D. from Georgia State, was featured in an Atlanta Business Chronicle article on Nov. 5, 2004.
