Spring Convocation Ceremony

This convocation is for all spring and summer undergraduate, master's and education specialist candidates.

All College of Education doctoral degree candidates (Ph.D. and Ed.D.) will participate in a separate hooding ceremony. For more information about the Ph.D. hooding ceremony, click here.

Information for Students

Attire:
Please remember that all students who are participating will be required to wear an appropriate graduation cap and robe, either the official Georgia State robe or a plain black graduation gown.

The deadline to order GSU regalia for early pick up at the March Commencement Fair has expired. If you placed your order by Feb. 18, please remember that the Commencement Fair will be held March 27 and 28 in the Student Center Ballroom from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

 

If you would still like to order GSU regalia, it is not too late. Please visit http://colleges.herffjones.com/college/georgiastate/ to place your order. Or, you may also attend the Commencement Fair, where you can order your cap and gown. If you attend the Commencement Fair to place your order, please be prepared to give measurements for your regalia. After ordering, your regalia can be picked up at the University Bookstore May 8-10.

Bachelor’s students who have earned university honors will receive the honor cord through the Graduation Office at the Commencement Fair in March. If you are unable to attend the Commencement Fair to pick up your cords, or if you want to verify that you are to receive cords, please contact the Graduation Office directly at 404-413-2248, or e-mail graduation@gsu.edu. You may visit the office in-person at Citizens Trust Building (75 Piedmont Avenue, Suite 1190, Atlanta 30303).

 

If you would like to order a blue tassel to wear at Convocation, please visit https://netcommunity.gsu.edu/NetCommunity/SSLPage.aspx?pid=226 to order, and to be part of the 2013 class gift. However, this is not required, and if you would prefer to wear the standard black tassel, you may do so.

D
egree candidates who would like to exercise the option to wear a plain black graduation gown, you may buy one from a variety of sources, including Ebay and Craig's list as well as from a variety of other vendors such as http://www.graduationsource.com or http://www.americancapandgown.com. Please note that you are shopping at your own risk on these additional sites, so plan ahead in case the robe isn't shipped in time. Please don't forget to order the cap as well.

If you have any issues or concerns regarding regalia, please contact coeconvocation@gsu.edu or call 404-413-8131 as soon as possible so we may help you. The College of Education would like all degree candidates who desire to participate to do so. We are available to direct you to resources for assistance.

Registration:
We must have RSVPs from all students participating in convocation as well as the number of their guests. Graduates wishing to participate should confirm the following information by May 6, 2013, at coeconvocation@gsu.edu or 404-413-8131

  • Full name
  • Degree information
  • Number of guests attending

Check-In:
Please plan to arrive at the Student Center Speakers Auditorium between 2 and 3:30 p.m. to receive instructions, and line up for the processional to the Sports Arena. Graduates arriving after 3:45 p.m. may not be permitted to march. Do not report to the Sports Arena, as you will process in; however, please send your family and friends directly to the Sports Arena for seating. The ceremony will start at 4 p.m. 

Please wear your robe and bring your cap, honor cord, etc. Do not bring extra items to the Speakers Auditorium. You will not be allowed to march in the processional with extra possessions. Ladies, please limit your purse to a small clutch or shoulder bag worn discreetly under your robe. Note: The College of Education is not responsible for any valuables left unattended in the Speakers Auditorium.

Photography:
A photographer will be taking photos throughout the ceremony. Details on obtaining photos will be made available on this web site and at the event.  

Featured Speaker:
Ryan Cameron, Emmy award-winning host of “The Ryan Cameron Morning Show” on V-103 (WVEE) and the public address announcer for the Atlanta Hawks, will serve as the featured speaker. Cameron’s career in radio has earned him several honors, including the Marconi Award for Excellence in Radio Broadcasting, the WXIA Community Service Award, the NAACP President’s Award and the Metro Atlanta Arts Fund Award. In 2002, he and his wife, Kysha Cameron, co-founded The Ryan Cameron Foundation, a nonprofit organization that offers events and resources to prepare Atlanta’s youth for a smooth transition to adulthood.

Information for Guests

Family and friends are invited to attend the ceremony. Students may invite unlimited guests; however, we must have an RSVP for each person attending. Please be sure to confirm the number of guests attending when you register for Convocation.

The Georgia State Sports Arena will be open to guests at 2 p.m. Guests will not need tickets to enter and will be seated on a first come, first serve basis. Please let us know if your guests will need wheelchair seating by sending a message to coeconvocation@gsu.edu.

Please ask your guests to plan for ample time to arrive downtown and to park in order be on time. Parking in Georgia State University's G Deck is available at a discounted rate of $3. (Guests will have limited opportunities to enter the lower level of the Sports Arena after the ceremony has begun.) The ceremony will last approximately 1 ½ hours to 2 hours.
