Adelaide Sanford, retired educator and former vice chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents, will speak at the 24th annual Benjamin E. Mays Lecture on Oct. 4, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. in the Georgia State University Speakers Auditorium (44 Courtland St., Atlanta).
This event, co-hosted by the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence, is free and open to the public. A reception will be held from 5:30-6:15 p.m. and a dessert reception will follow the lecture.
In her 35-year career in education, Sanford served as an elementary school teacher, guidance counselor, assistant principal and principal in New York City, garnering city-wide recognition for her school's improvements in student achievement, teacher morale and gifted programs. After retiring in 1985, she was elected to two 7-year terms as a member-at-large on the New York State Board of Regents and served two 3-year terms as its vice chancellor. Sanford's leadership in elementary school education and empowering low-income communities earned her numerous awards, including the Josephine Shaw Lowell Award and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Humanitarian Award.
In addition to her work in schools and on the Board of Regents, Sanford was a consultant for the Board of Education in Niagara Falls, Connecticut, Indiana and New Jersey, and served on several national committees, including the Mark Owens' National Commission on African American Education and the advisory committee on multicultural education for the National Association of State Boards of Education.
The annual Benjamin E. Mays Memorial Lecture Series, which began in 1989, is intended to encourage the discussion of issues facing urban educational leaders through a series of symposia, conferences and lectures. This year's theme is, "Wisdom, Work, Will: Advancing Educational Excellence." This program not only honors the memory of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, but also promotes his philosophy of excellence in the education of those typically least well served by the larger society.
