COE to celebrate Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic’s 35th anniversary

by Claire Miller

For 35 years, the College of Education’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic has served hundreds of people with communication disorders while preparing COE students to become speech-language pathologists.

Now, it’s time to celebrate.

The clinic invites the university community and metro-Atlanta residents to a number of events and activities Sept. 20-23 in the College of Education building (30 Pryor St., Atlanta) to celebrate the clinic’s 35th anniversary.

“The anniversary celebrations will give us the chance to reflect on where we’ve been and discuss where we see ourselves headed in the future,” said Debra Schober-Peterson, the clinic’s director. “We’ll be able to share all the good works we’ve done for so many years.”

The clinic, which opened in 1975 in the Urban Life Building at Georgia State University, allows students studying to become speech-language pathologists to work with patients on articulation and stuttering, using the correct words in the right context and other issues. The clinic moved to the eighth floor of the College of Education building in 1994 and offers its services to students, faculty, staff and the metro-Atlanta community.

The week-long celebration will kick off Monday, Sept. 20 with a panel discussion on the history of the clinic with former faculty and staff members. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, the college’s monthly Doughnuts with the Dean will feature information about the clinic, door prizes and a drawing for free clinic services. Speech-language specialist Lyn Turkstra from the University of Wisconsin-Madison will give a presentation at the COE’s weekly Research Wednesdays series on Sept. 22. All of these activities lead up to the clinic’s open house on Sept. 23, complete with demonstrations of how the students and faculty work with clients.
