For the sixth consecutive year, the College of Education induction committee will hold its semi-annual pair of morning and evening Professional Educator Induction Seminars (PEIS). The full morning workshop for COE students and Georgia State students considering a career in teaching will be Friday, October 23, 2009, from 7:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. in the Rialto Center for the Arts. The abbreviated evening version - for GSU student teachers already working in schools - will be Tuesday, October 27 from 4:30 - 7:15 p.m. in Georgia State’s General Classroom Building, Room 300. These free, informative seminars, presented every October and February, focus on topics essential to new and student teacher success.
Friday, October 23 will be framed by two one-hour common workshops. The first examines ethics in education - what every new teacher needs to know with Ms. Teresa Reese and Mr. Harold Cooper, Employee Relations Officers, Office of Internal Resolution/Employee Relations in the Atlanta Public Schools. Later, a panel of human resource representatives from eight area school systems will be featured in the final common workshop, with the panel answering students’ practical questions related to placement and hiring. Breakout workshops will offer a choice of topics including: navigating the online resource for educators known as The Bridge; interviewing for and succeeding in your first teaching job; understanding Response to Intervention (RTI) services; and utilizing professional organizations.
A streamlined version of the PEIS will be held on October 27. This relevant, fast-paced evening for student teachers already placed in a school will focus on understanding RTI services and real world scenarios regarding ethics in education, among other topics.
The spring 2010 Professional Educator Induction Seminars are scheduled for February, 2010. For further information contact Laurie Forstner, Project Coordinator, lforstner@gsu.edu.
