Leadership and Scholarship Focused on Learning and Development

Our graduates need to have learned the conceptual and practical aspects of teaching or counseling or leadership. Equally important, however, we ensure that our graduates prepare their students to be learners throughout their lifetimes. Learning must be able to occur in many contexts.

Teaching is more than preparing lessons for classrooms. Lifelong learning occurs in many contexts other than the school and in different contexts within the school. Educators need to encourage and teach their students to capitalize on each and every opportunity in which learning can occur. In order to accomplish this objective, our programs must be Creative and our graduates must be able to work in creative ways. Teaching is a creative process that requires professionals to reach success with each and every child. No longer can we only believe that "all children can learn," we must be prepared to act so that "all children do learn." All children will learn only when we stress the criterion of Effectiveness in all we do.

We cannot rely on theory alone; educators must be applied researchers who can evaluate their successes and failures so that they can change them when they do not satisfy the criterion of effectiveness. At Georgia State University, the professional education faculty is dedicated to working with all of our students so that they can be scholars and leaders for learning and development.
