Dr. Brenda Pitts publishes new textbook

Filled with helpful figures and charts, this first-of-its-kind textbook is a vital resource for students, teachers, and industry professionals. Authors Ming Li, Brenda Pitts, and Jerome Quarterman are all expert researchers in their areas of specialization and have written extensively in both books and journals. Their current roles in teaching college-level courses have allowed them to understand exactly how to tailor research methods to the topic of sport management and to compile the important information presented in Research Methods in Sport Management.

Dr. Mike Metzler named AAHPERD District Scholar

Dr. Mike Metzler, Professor of Health and Physical Education, was named the District Scholar by the Southern Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance .

Dr. Walt Thompson named Regents Professor

Dr. Walt Thompson, an exercise physiology professor in the department was recently appointed Regents Professor of Kinesiology and Health by the Georgia Board of Regents.  A Regents Professor is a distinction only a few have achieved while at Georgia State University.  Dr. Thompson was recognized for his many years of scholarship and his impact both nationally and internationally.  Dr. Thompson holds a second academic appointment in the Division of Nutrition, School of Allied Health Professions, College of Health & Human Sciences. 

Walt Thompson was quoted in Edutopia

Walt Thompson was quoted in the December 2005/January 2006 issue of the George Lucas Educational Foundation magazine Edutopia. The article, “Great balls O’ fitness,” was about how to incorporate structured physical activity into recess time at school. Thompson was also quoted in an article, “When exercise is a real pain,” published in the Kansas City Star on Jan. 13.

Walt Thompson was quoted in an article, “Getting exercisers back on their feet,” by John Briley, a syndicated columnist. It was published in several newspapers around the country including the Sun Sentinel (Florida), Kansas City Star, Fort Wayne Journal and Dallas Morning News. Thompson was also quoted in another article, “Guidelines to the workout,” in the Orlando Sentinel.

Mark Geil has been named chair of the Biomechanics and Technology study section for the Arthritis Foundation. He also recently received his fourth grant from the Prosthetics Research Study from Department of Education funding to produce online continuing education courses for clinicians in prosthetics and orthotics.
