The Urban Literacy Clinic at Georgia State University prepares educators each year in the following programs:
The work of the literacy clinic is multi-layered and multi-dimensional. Children come to the clinic to receive literacy support and enrichment while teachers-in-training learn how to design and implement research based literacy lessons tailored to the abilities of each child. Master-level teachers who are preparing to become Literacy Leaders within their schools learn how to thoughtfully observe and guide the literacy lessons, providing feedback and direction to the teachers. PhD students assist in the design of the program and gather important research about children, teachers, and teacher preparation to share with other professionals in the field of literacy education. Faculty members associated with the literacy clinic guide the process, deepening their knowledge about how children and teachers learn. Everyone involved in the literacy clinic is expected to share the knowledge they gain with their peers, the community, and the profession in an effort to transform education.
