Overview:
Traditionally, children with loss of a limb at or above the knee joint have not been fit with a prosthetic knee joint until they reach four or five years of age out of concern for stability. This project, in collaboration with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, investigates an alternative treatment protocol in which children are provided with an articulating knee unit in their first prosthesis. The implications of this approach are being assessed in crawling infants and toddlers and in ambulatory children to ascertain effects on neuromotor development.
