- Congratulations to recent graduates
Congratulations to recent graduates from the Kinesiology program with job placements at top institutions. Dr. Paula Pullen (Spring 2009) is an Instructor (Series Two) in the Department of Physiology at Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Katherine Heimburger Ingram (Fall 2009) is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Alabama Birmingham’s School of Public Health, and Dr. Benjamin Corona (Fall 2009) is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Wake Forest University Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

Dr. Mike Metzler Elected as Active Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education
The American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education (AAKPE) announced the recent election of its newest Fellows, to be inducted at its 80th Annual Meeting in October. Three individuals were named Active Fellows and three others were named International Fellows of the AAKPE. Among the Class of 2009 Inductees will be Dr. Mike Metzler, professor in the GSU Department of Kinesiology and Health. All new Fellows will be inducted in a ceremony to be held on Saturday, October 3rd in San Diego
The Academy’s membership is considered a “who’s who list” of the top individuals in the fields of Kinesiology and Physical Education. In order to be elected into membership, individuals must be nominated by a current member of the Academy and must be currently engaged in professional and/or scientific work in kinesiology or physical education, and have demonstrated competence in this profession/discipline over a period of at least 10 years (significant contributions to scholarly and professional literature, leadership activities in professional associations and learned societies). The AAKPE was established in 1926 to recognize outstanding scholars in the study of physical activity. Since 1926, about 490 individuals nationwide have been inducted into the Academy.

On June 10, 2009, Dr. Richard Reiselt presented the new Georgia Performance Standards for Physical Education to the State School Board for approval. This is the culmination of a year-long project to develop new content standards for physical education. Dr. Jackie Lund, Associate Professor from the Kinesiology and Health Department at Georgia State University, chaired the 15 person writing team that developed the standards. If approved on June 11, 2009, the new Physical Education Standards will provide the framework for curriculum development for school district across the state.
- Drs. Ellis & Gurvitch inducted into AAHPERD Research Consortium
The Research Consortium has announced its 2009 class of Fellows to be inducted at the AAHPERD national convention. Dr. Rebecca Ellis and Dr. Rachel Gurvitch, both Kinesiology & Health faculty members, were among the distinguished scholars. Those chosen to join the Consortium demonstrate an ongoing commitment to research and a high level of achievement in their field.

Dr. Mike Metzler elected President-Elect of the National Association of Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education for 2009.
- Dr. Jackie Lund receives the NAKPEHE Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Jackie Lund receives the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education.
