INDUCTION STEERING COMMITTEE

PROGRESS REPORT JANUARY 2003

 

  • Aug 26 meeting:
    • Subcommittees were formed:
      • Orientation
      • Packet of information
      • Web page
      • Flyer
  • Sept. 23 meeting:
    • Continuing to contact participants for school information
    • Flyer being sent to principals explaining induction program
    • Decided to compile FAQ for website
    • Online seminar for beginning teachers created for Oct. 10 th conference
    • Laura Touchstone explained required seminar for all student teachers at end of student teaching semester. Department contacts were urged to attend this seminar.
  • Oct. 9 meeting:
    • Subcommittee for packet info and flyers created a magnet which displays the website for the beginning teacher support program. It was approved and will be sent to students, principals, mentors, etc.
    • Orientation subcommittee suggested a seminar for all students new to teacher education.
    • Web page sub committee working on FAQ, teacher education acronyms, teacher organization links, and mentor support information.
    • Telephone surveys of new teachers indicated new teachers are unfamiliar with our Induction Program and the website. They want GSU support, but are not likely to participate in seminars, due to time constraints.
    • A brochure explaining the Beginning Teacher Support Program has been created and will be distributed as needed.
    • The GRAs asked the program contacts to let them know how they may be better utilized.
    • Program contacts were asked to consider keeping a log of their contacts with new teachers, to enhance the FAQ.
  • Oct. 21 meeting:
    • The Oct. 10 online seminar yielded no participants. It is doubtful that any more will be held, unless there is a specific need identified by the new teachers. It is possible that we will partner with the school districts to hold seminars jointly with them.
    • Our new teachers will be contacted and encouraged to attend the teacher’s conference at Kennesaw State University. Nov. 19-21.
  • Nov. 6 meeting
    • The proposal for an orientation program was presented for comments, suggestions.
    • Edi encouraged attendance at the upcoming symposium on teacher induction at the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Feb. 3-4, 2003.
  • Nov. 18 meeting
    • Database design is nearing completion.
    • Orientation workshop proposal calls for a general session, followed by program specific workshops.
    • Final Fall 02 Student Teaching Seminar asked for suggestions and then created a PP presentation outlining reasons why students should elect to participate and sign the consent forms.
  • Dec. 4 meeting:
    • Final plans were made for the student teacher seminar. Input was given on the PP presentation to be shown to the new teachers.
    • Orientation program will be postponed; it is not ready for spring 03. Pilot will probably be conducted summer 03.
