Performance Analysis Description--Spelling

Student's Name--Kenny

Teacher's Name

What I Know: What I need to Know:
Background Factors--Student's placement (including IEP goals and objectives, classroom placement, and grouping), classroom setting (service delivery issues), and student's previous performance. K. is 8-3 and in a 2nd grade class and receives LD resource help. He was seated in the 2nd grade class. IEP Goal: Kenny will improve the legibility of his writing. IEP Objective: Kenny will form manuscript letters the proper form, size, and alignment when writing for 90% of letters 3/4 days. Is this typical of other assignments that are given and is K's performance typical? Is K being served for a written expression deficit? If so, what are the goals and objectives?
Antecedent Factors--Instructions (including lesson objective), instruction provided (e.g., modeling, strategies), curriculum used (including type, size of units), and task analysis. Assignment was to compose a sentence for each spelling word. Words were on chalkboard. What instruction was provided-- e.g., modeling of the task? Is this a typical assignment? What happens if he is told to be sure to "leave a space" or told to work neatly?
Behavior Factors--Specify student's behavior, identify instances in which the appropriate behavior or approximations of behavior have occured. K. wrote 7 complete sentences, started 3/7 with a capital letter, put a period at the end of 6/6 declarative and a ? after 0/1 interogative sentences, spelled all words correctly, used words in a meaningful way, left no space between words 26/25 times, all letter same height. Is K's performance the same if he copies the sentences, if he uses graph paper, if he skips a line between sentences, if he uses a finger to space? Can he use cursive writing?
Contingency Factors--Specify whether student can't or won't do task and related conditions--type of reinforcers and schedule of reinforcement--and issues of motivation. Unknown What happens if he is awarded for neatness? --for spacing? if his work is to be displayed for others?

Remediation suggestion: (A set of 4 objectives)

The objectives will focus on the lack of spacing between the words because this problem creates the greatest dificulty in reading the content.

  1. Kenny will draw a box around each of the words he wrote with 95% accuracy. (Uses a recognition response and starts with his exact behavior)
  2. Kenny will copy 7 sentences from a model on his desk on to graph paper leaving a block space between each word 90% of the time for 3 or 4 trials. (Uses near-point copying and a structured response that guides leaving spaces between the words)
  3. Kenny will write 7 sentences on graph paper leaving a block space between each word 90% of the time for 3 of 4 trials.
  4. Kenny will write 7 sentences on standard paper using his finger to leave a 1/2" space between each word 90% of the time for 3 of 4 trials.
