An Example of Curriculum-Based Evaluation Tools

The EXC 7130 course requirements require:

Develop curriculum-based evaluation tools for two specified curriculum areas (language development, reading, written
expression, mathematics, or social skills). Assessments must cover multiple grade levels (typically 3), include at least two types
of CBE measurements (or subskills) and be tied to specific curricula.

Here is an example of such a set of "tools" for working with a student in fourth grade who is having trouble in reading (reading is a bit more challenging than math)

The curriculum to which the assessment is anchored (you may choose to use curriculum objectives from the scope and sequence list in the material or from the QCC objectives).

Assessment 1.

Materials: Graded reading materials from the school's basal reading series.

Directions: The student will orally read material from the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd grades readers while I record accuracy.

Data Collected: Fluency--correct words read per minute; accuracy--percent of words read correctly; evidence of comprehension--do errors violate meaning?

Criteria of acceptable performance (CAP): Fluency-->100wpm    Accuracy-->90%   comprehension---do errors violate the meaning?

Assessment 2.

Hypothesis:  Perhaps it's a comprehension problem.

Materials:  Graded reading materials to assess comprehension using maze from the school's basal reading series (my link still won't work).

Directions: Student will silently read the graded passage and will select the word that fits the meaning of the passage.

Data Collected: Maze--percent of items answered correctly

Criteria of acceptable performance (CAP) >80%

Assessment 3

Hypothesis: Perhaps it's a decoding problem.

Materials;  Graded reading materials from the school's basal reading series to be read and then reread to see if reading improves.

Directions: Student will orally read and reread the graded passage to see if fluency and accuracy improve.

Data Collected:

Criteria of acceptable performance (CAP)

Assessment 4

Hypothesis: Perhaps it's a lack of decoding skills.

Materials: Collect and errror sample using materials from the reading curriculum.

Criteria of acceptable performance (CAP)

Assessment 5

Hypothesis: Perhaps it's a lack of sight words.
