Georgia Deafblind Census

Every state is required by the federal government to maintain a census of the number of children and youth who are deafblind, including some descriptive information regarding the type of deafblindness. This information helps provide federal grant money to support technical assistance activities for educators and families. It also allows the Georgia Sensory Assistance Project to provide technical assistance to schools and families.

The Georgia Deafblind Census contains a wealth of information to better understand the population being served. Major causes of deafblindness are identified, as well as the severity of vision and hearing loss, and the presence of additional disabilities. Information on how the child or youth with deafblindness is being served is also included.

Anyone can refer a child to the Georgia Sensory Assistance Project to be included on the census. After verification of deafblindness is received by Project staff, the child’s family, teachers, and related support personnel will be eligible for technical assistance.  Census information is completely confidential and no names or identifying information is submitted to the federal government.

The Georgia Deafblind Census is updated throughout the year. However, there is an annual mailing to all school systems to verify our current information. After necessary changes are made, the census (without any names, schools, or addresses) is mailed to the federal government where it is complied with information obtained from other states.

If you have any changes or any new students to add to the census, please contact the project staff. THANKS!
