Words in Context

Chapter 1

Enormous - Both of them suddenly got eaten up by an enormous angry rhinoceros, which had escaped from the London Zoo.

Mischief - "The nasty little beast will only get into mischief of he goes out of the garden."

Nuisance - They never called him buy his real name, but referred to him as "you filthy nuisance".

Permitted - Neither Aunt Sponge nor aunt Spiker could ever be bothered to take him out herself, not even for a small walk or a picnic, and he certainly wasn't permitted to go alone.

Chapter 2

Peculiar - For now, there came a morning when something rather peculiar happened to him.

Hag - And there they sat, these two ghastly hags, sipping their drinks.

Blunt - The chopper was a large blunt thing far too heavy for a small boy to use.

Spectacles - "What's the matter with you?" Aunt Spiker screeched, glaring at him over the top of her steel spectacles.

Chapter 3

Emerging - For suddenly, just behind him, James heard a rustling of leaves, and he turned around and saw an old man in a crazy dark-green suit emerging from the bushes.

Beckoning - "Come closer to me, little boy, " he said, beckoning to James with a finger.

Chapter 4

Gulp - In a couple of minutes the water will begin to froth and bubble furiously, and as soon as that happens you must quickly drink it all down, the whole jugful, in one gulp.

Miserable - You will never be miserable again in your life.

Chapter 5

Scattered - The paper bag burst open as it hit the ground and the thousands of tiny green things were scattered in all directions.

Vanished - Each time the tips of his fingers were just about to touch them, they vanished into the earth!

Chapter 6

Mistaken - I think you must be mistaken, my dear Spiker.

Ripe - The peach looks ripe to me.

Chapter 7

Extraordinary - The two women and the small boy stood absolutely still on the grass underneath the tree, gazing up at this extraordinary fruit.

Mammoth - In another minute, this mammoth fruit was as large and round and fat as Aunt Sponge herself, and probably just as heavy.

Spellbound - As for James, he was so spellbound by the whole thing that he could only stand and stare and murmur quietly to himself.

Cautiously - Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker began walking slowly around the peach, inspecting it very cautiously from all sides.

Chapter 8

Greedy- The money came rolling into the pockets of the two greedy aunts.

Chapter 9

Trembling - Hungry and trembling, James stood alone out in the open, wondering what to do.

Chapter 10

Tunnel - The tunnel was damp and murky

Soggy - The floor was soggy under his knees.

Gigantic - He was crawling uphill now, as though the tunnel were leading straight toward the very center of the gigantic fruit.

Horror - His face white with horror.

Glanced - Bolt - He glanced behind him, thinking he could bolt back into the tunnel the way he had come.
