Early Childhood and Elementary Education (ECEE)

The Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education in the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University is seeking a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor in elementary education (grades PreK-5) with expertise in mathematics education. Georgia State University is a Research I institution with considerable emphasis on recruiting productive scholars.

Responsibilities: The faculty member is expected to maintain a balanced portfolio of research, scholarship, teaching, and service efforts. Primary scholarly responsibilities include having an active and productive research agenda, including publications of research and scholarly work, participation in professional organizations, and presentations at conferences. Teaching responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to the mathematics education of elementary students. Currently, the department offers a five course K-5 Mathematics Endorsement program for practicing elementary teachers and a two course sequence of undergraduate mathematics methods courses for prospective teachers. Some teaching could be conducted at local partner school sites. Additional responsibilities include: mentoring graduate students, supervising field experiences of students, and serving on departmental, college, and university committees, as well as service to the professional community.

Qualifications: Qualifications include: an earned doctorate in Early Childhood and/or Elementary Education or relevant field with a mathematics education focus; expertise in standards-based mathematics instruction; and experience in and commitment to working with diverse students in urban elementary schools. Successful applicants will have 3 years of professional experience with K-12 students. Demonstrated research through publications and presentations is a plus, along with experiences teaching mathematics education courses in a university setting.  Familiarity with Cognitively Guided Instruction and/or the Teacher Performance Assessment edTPA are helpful.

Educational Policy Studies (EPS)

The Department of Educational Policy Studies in the College of Education at Georgia State University invites applications for the position of Limited Term Clinical Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership.

Position Description:  Reporting to the department chair, the clinical assistant professor’s responsibilities include teaching courses in Educational Leadership / Administration, advising students in the Ed.D., Ed.S. and M.Ed. programs. The position requires a terminal degree and is a 10-month limited term appointment.

Qualifications: The successful applicant will have an earned doctorate in educational leadership, educational administration or a related / supporting area in education relevant to the Educational Leadership Section, and has the ability to teach courses in these areas. These courses are taught on-line, off-campus and on-campus, including evenings and weekends. This person will be expected to work with diverse student populations, model technology use, provide service to the department, and communicate effectively with educational partners. Additionally, it is required that the applicant has had previous experience as an educational leader in P-12 education and the ability to articulate and integrate certification requirements into course content. Preferred qualifications include teaching experience at a college or university especially in educational leadership, experience as an assistant principal or principal, experience administering educational programs, experience teaching online courses, and knowledge of performance-based models of leadership preparation. Interest in working with a Principals Center associated with the Educational Leadership Section would also be desirable.

Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Communication Disorders (ESC)

The Department of Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Communication Disorders of the College of Education & Human Development at Georgia State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to coordinate and teach in the American Sign Language Interpreter Program (SLIP).

The Department of Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Communication Disorders is committed to excellent college teaching and to strong research programs that are externally funded. The Department averages 5 million dollars annually in external funding from various federal funding agencies such as the Institute for Educational Sciences, the Office of Special Education programs, and the National Institutes of Health. As part of Georgia State University’s Second Century Initiative (2CI), we anticipate faculty openings for two scholars with established external funding and research in adult literacy. The 2CI program focuses on expanding the university’s priority research areas and includes support (start-up funding) and funded doctoral student fellowships. New faculty will add depth and breadth to the current federally-funded IES Center for the Study of Adult Literacy and to the newly developing College of Education & Human Development’s Adult Literacy Research Center (ALRC). Appointments are anticipated to begin Fall 2017.

Position Description: Faculty members will be hired at the rank of professor or associate professor (possibility with tenure on appointment). Applicants are expected to have strong records of scholarship, funded research, excellence in teaching, and service in family literacy or health literacy. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to be part of a variety of adult literacy related initiatives, such as helping to develop the ALRC, helping to plan professional development instruction for Georgia’s adult literacy teachers, and participating in numerous community related opportunities, such as access to adult literacy programs and adult literacy advocacy groups.

Qualifications: A doctorate in relevant areas, such as health communication, public health, family studies, educational psychology, language, and/or literacy is required. Upon hire, faculty members will be expected to conduct a successful, externally-funded research program that includes peer-reviewed publications in the area of adult literacy. Tenure can be considered in the College of Education & Human Development, or the School of Public Health in an appropriate department.

Post-doctoral fellowships are available as part of the Research on the Challenges of Acquiring  Language & Literacy (RCALL) Initiative at Georgia State University.

RCALL is an innovative collaborative effort crossing colleges and departments. Our research is conducted by faculty and students from two colleges (Arts & Sciences and Education & Human Development) and ten departments including the departments of Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Communication Disorders, Psychology, Applied Linguistics and Early Childhood Education. We have a distinctive interdisciplinary postdoctoral training program focused on the acquisition of language and literacy in children and adults. Our research programs address not only basic conceptual and methodological issues in the area of language and literacy acquisition, but also the design and evaluation of interventions that may help individuals overcome challenges in the acquisition of language and literacy. As part of the university's Next Generation initiative, the two-year fellowship will provide trainees with intensive training in intervention research with special populations, analyses of existing databases using advanced statistical techniques, and in professional development, including grant writing and professional presentations and publication. We are seeking individuals who bring cutting-edge skills (e.g., in adaptive technologies, virtual reality, neuroimaging, complex methods of analyses) to their own programs of research.
