A Comprehensive Examination of the Arrowsmith Program at One Private School in Atlanta

This study examines the effectiveness of one particular brain-training program called the Arrowsmith Program that has been implemented at an Atlanta area private school. This research study employs a mixed-methods investigation using a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design to assess student achievement, a Likert-scale survey administered to 78 parents and 39 students to obtain their perceptions of characteristics related to learning, and qualitative focus groups to provide contextual data. Quantitative data will be gathered using pre-test and post-test scores from the IOWA Tests of Basic Skills for a total of 60 students; 30 in the Arrowsmith group and 30 in a matched comparison group. These students range in grade level from 3 to 8. In addition, students and parents will complete a survey rating eighteen different characteristics related
to learning. Qualitative data will be collected through the use of focus groups; one with the Arrowsmith teachers and another with the classroom teachers of the Arrowsmith students. The qualitative data will be collected and analyzed to assess the perspective of the students, parents, and teachers associated with Arrowsmith. Themes from the focus groups will be used to provide contextual details and teacher perceptions from differing viewpoints.
