Determining the Role of the Art Museum in the Development of Students’ Perception of Their Place in the Art World

In the school setting students are encouraged to think and behave like members of an art community. Art teachers ask students to discuss, display, and create visual art using methods also used by art professionals. Despite these efforts, however, students do not identify themselves as vital members of a larger art world. The school culture limits student perception of their artistic role. This qualitative study seeks to determine how the student’s perception of their art role would be altered if those limitations were removed. Using Falk and Dierking’s Contextual Model of Learning, this single case study design explores the effect of knowledge construction within the art museum on the development of student’s perceptions of their place in the art world. A selected group of third through fifth graders will take on the role of artist, museum visitor, curator and docent for an extended time at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Ethnographic research methods will be used to document how the physical, social and personal contexts of the museum will shape the student’s ability to recognize their place in the larger art world. The study is significant in that it fills a gap within the current body of research which is primarily concerned with student identity within the classroom.
