Band on The Brain: Instrumental Music and Student Achievement

For the past 20 years, non-core programs such as instrumental music instruction have been reduced or eliminated in many schools, largely due to the failure of accountability measures to inform policy makers about the impact of these programs on achievement (Major, 2013). This work addresses that failure by investigating the following question: To what extent does school-based instrumental music instruction impact the learning outcomes of a cohort of high school students in a private Catholic school setting?
The research is quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design measuring students on the following dependent variables: SAT-1 0, PSAT, and SAT (depending on grade) standardized test scores in mathematics and reading/verbal, before and after instmmentalmusic instruction. Test scores in reading/verbal and mathematics will be input into Stata Data Analysis and Statistical Software to assess possible differences between groups resulting from music instruction.
Standardized test scores in reading and mathematics come from (a) the Stanford Achievement Test version 10 (SAT-I 0) for students in 8′” grade, (b) from the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) for students in 9th to 11th grades, and (c) from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for 12th grade.
