The Out-of-School Writing Experiences of Elementary Age Boys

This study investigates what has generally been overlooked in literacy and educational research, the out-of-school writing experiences of elementary age boys. Few researchers are talking with boys about their experiences,
specifically what they write, what media they use to write, and the purposes for their compositions. My theoretical framework combines sociocultural theory (Rogoff, 2003; Vygotsky, 1978; Wertsch, 1991, 1998) and self-determination theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 1985) to shed light on the social, cultural, and motivational aspects of boys as they write outside of school settings. The potential participants for this study are elementary age boys (7-12 years). I will use detailed, multi-layered qualitative analyses of multiple data sources that comprise individual interviews with the boys, their parents, along with writing artifacts provided by the boys, including a writing log, and my own reflective research journal. Once all data are collected and analyzed, I will write an ethnodrama to represent the data. Ethnodrama can provide both a crucial lens through which to view research and an opening for an intense response from the reader/viewer. Since there is little evidence of what is happening with elementary age boys and their writing in out-of-school settings, this study will shed light on their experiences in order to provide a powerful resource about what is taking place outside of schools and help others to see that boys are indeed writers.
