STEM Education: A Qualitative Study on the Impact of a Mobile Device (iPad) On The Quality of Quantity of Inquiry-Based Instruction In A Stem Learning Environment

This dissertation will contribute to a growing body of research around inquiry-based instruction through the use of mobile devices in STEM learning environments. Through the social constructivist paradigm, “interpretive research” will be conducted with the intent of gaining an understanding of the impact a mobile device has on the level of inquiry-based instruction in a STEM learning environment within a science classroom. The goal of this study is to offer a dual pedagogical approach to teaching and learning in a STEM learning environment that outlines how mobile technologies impact inquiry-based instructional strategies. A purposeful selection of
6th, 7th, and 8th grade science classrooms will be observed in a single-gender middle school currently seeking STEM certification in an urban school district.
The measure of inquiry-based instruction will be conducted through the Electronic Quality of Inquiry Protocol (EQUIP). EQUIP was designed to provide a framework for evaluating the quality of inquiry-based instruction in science and math classrooms. This qualitative case study will include demographic information, teacher interviews, lesson plan artifacts, and science classroom observations. The intent is to assess inquiry-based instruction in the STEM learning environment.
